Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he’s not planning on swapping club football with international football anytime soon.
Mourinho signed a three-year contract when he was appointed as Manchester United manager in May 2016, keeping him at the club until the end of next season, but hasn’t extended his deal yet.
Many believe the 55-year-old will eventually take the leap into international management, but he has revealed that it’s not something that interests him at this moment in time.
Mourinho told GQ magazine in an exclusive interview ahead of the World Cup this summer: “Managing Portugal? No. No! I am not close at all. I think being the coach of a club is my job.
“I need to play matches every week and train every day. I would say I am even further away from being tired now than I was a few years ago.
“I don’t believe the best football is played at that tournament (World Cup) Why? Because in club football you have more time to work with the players and that is something international teams just don’t have.”
It is expected that Mourinho will sign a new contract to stay at Old Trafford, with clear improvements on display since the start of his tenure and two major trophies in his first season.
Despite a second-place Premier League finish in the 2017-18 campaign, the highest since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year before retirement, United won no silverware and finished 19 points behind champions Manchester City.
The general consensus amongst fans is that Mourinho is the man to take the club forward ahead of his third season in charge, and the Portuguese boss is certainly speaking like he’s planning on a long-term stay in club management, should that be at United or elsewhere.
