Done deal: Man United confirm signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred

Manchester United have announced the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred on a five-year deal with the option of a further year via their YouTube channel.

Fred has signed a five-year contract at Man United after a £52m fee was agreed with the Ukrainian champions on Sunday.

The Brazilian travelled to Manchester immediately after Brazil’s 2-0 World Cup warm-up victory over Croatia at Anfield on Sunday afternoon and completed his medical at the Aon Training Complex on Monday.

His personal terms were agreed and the contract was signed at United’s Mayfair office in London on Tuesday ahead of the announcement.

Since moving to Shakhtar from home country club Internacional for €15m in 2013, Fred has been a key player for the top-flight club – making 155 appearances, scoring and assisting 15 goals.

Fred has a good amount of experience at the top level already, featuring in 30 Champions League matches in his career – experience that will prove to be important in United’s 2018-19 European campaign.

The 25-year-old has also had a taste of silverware prior to his move to the most successful club in England, winning three Ukrainian Premier League titles, three Ukrainian Cups and four Super Cups of Ukraine during his time at the Donbass Arena.

He is described as a gifted passer with both feet while still defensively diligent and has drawn up comparisons with Manchester City star Fernandinho.

Fred is part of a very competitive Brazil midfield and has achieved eight caps with his country, and will be looking to add to that tally throughout the 2018 World Cup

Fred has rejoined the Tite’s squad at Tottenham Hotspur’s Enfield Training Centre before jetting off to Russia for the tournament where he’ll be trying to help the nation achieve their sixth triumph.

The main story, though, is that Manchester United have made Fred their first signing of what should be a very interesting summer full of change.
