Player ratings: Farewell Carrick, United cruise to comfortable victory over Watford

Sergio Romero 6 – Produced an excellent stop from Richarlison’s close range header just before half time but had hardly anything else to do in a meandering encounter.

Matteo Darmian 6 – Struggled occasionally with the ebullient Daryl Janmaat but on the whole positioned himself well and defended diligently.

Eric Bailly 6 – Produced a solid, typically physical display at the back, dominating well in the box aside from losing Richarlison moments before half time.

Marcos Rojo 5 – The Argentine hasn’t featured regularly this season and his performance was indicative of exactly that: wayward on the ball and generally a bit rusty.

Ashley Young 6 – Held the ball with his usual composure and looked largely untroubled at the back. Could have got forward more.

Michael Carrick N/A – It didn’t feel right to measure Carrick’s final showing in a Manchester United shirt with a number. This may have been only his fourth start of the season but it reaffirmed the notion that the Englishman, aged 36, is still by far and away the best passer of the ball this country has to offer. His pass to set up Rashford’s goal was Carrick all over: grace, accuracy, timing, perfection, success. Thank you, captain. It’s been a pleasure. Football is a darker place without you on the pitch.

Scott McTominay 5 – Started the game poorly, gifting Watford possession with a series of poor balls, and while his composure improved his influence on the game felt minimal.

Daley Blind 7 – A quietly very accomplished performance in midfield from the Dutchman, who could have just played his final game for Man United. Very tidy in tight spaces, moving the ball nicely through the lines, and smart when pinching the ball off players.

Juan Mata 7 – In a game that lacked urgency the Spaniard, as he does so often, opened up the pitch with some lovely turns and caressed passes. Produced a wonderful assist for Rashford, controlling Carrick’s ball perfectly before laying it square for Rashford.

Alexis Sanchez 6 – Buzzed around with his usual fervour and desire but too often gave the ball away in sloppy fashion.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Claimed a much needed goal in the second half and applied himself well throughout, but his profligacy in the final third is a concern.
