Michael Carrick sends heartfelt message to Sir Alex Ferguson during farewell speech

Michael Carrick ended his farewell speech at Manchester United by sending a heartfelt message of support for Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Man United boss suffered a brain haemorrhage last week and underwent emergency brain surgery, prompting a flood of supportive messages for the Scot.

It was announced on Wednesday evening that Ferguson, whose operation had gone “very well”, had been moved from intensive care to the inpatient ward at Salford Royal Hospital as he works towards a full recovery.

And Carrick, speaking to the Old Trafford faithful after making his final appearance in a Man United shirt against Watford, concluded his speech by sending an emotional message to Ferguson.

Carrick: “Lastly, It’s been a tough week for everyone at the club. Part of this family is Sir Alex, he’s had a tough wee this week. I want to stay all our thoughts and prayers goes to Sir Alex. We want to see you here back soon.” #mufc

This was a game that was less about what was happening on the pitch and more about the context which surrounded it.

The Old Trafford crowd sat there in the resplendent Manchester sun, their team sloppily and lethargically grinding out a meaningless win, belting out the names of two men who have had a special impact on this club in different ways: Carrick and Ferguson.

For all the ire and bile which has come from this season, this pleasant Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford felt happily communal, stress free, as if briefly unburdened from the present and able to collectively appreciate two genuine icons of the modern game.

We wish Sir Alex, the ultimate fighter, a full recovery, and bid Carrick good luck in the next chapter of his career in the United dugout.
