Manchester United have held informal talks with Willian’s representatives over a potential move in the summer, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho brought Willian to Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2013 and has spoken effusively of the winger on several occasions, noting recently that he wanted to add a Brazilian player to his team.
Willian’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2020, and with the winger turning 30 next year his value could notably decrease should Chelsea decide to keep him this summer.
According to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, United have held preliminary discussions with the Brazilian’s representatives over the possibility of a move in the summer.
The report, it ought to be stressed, does not suggest that the prospect of Anthony Martial serving as part of the deal was explored, although it is likely Chelsea will make an enquiry concerning the Frenchman following a difficult five months under Jose Mourinho.
Man United have not been able to settle on a designated right sided winger this season and Mourinho, clearly frustrated at the inconsistencies of Martial, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata, would no doubt jump at the chance to add Willian – a player whose work rate and quality on the ball in tight spaces has helped endear him to the Portuguese – to his ranks over the summer.
Mourinho would be happy with an attacking trio of Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Willian supporting Lukaku, working quickly and efficiently in tight spaces to great gaps for the Belgian to exploit.
Where this leaves Rashford and Martial, however, remains to be seen.
