Man Utd need to do this to challenge next season

Manchester United must seek a backup for Paul Pogba this summer transfer window if they have any hopes of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

Jose Mourinho is said to be targeting improvements in the club’s engine room, particularly since Michael Carrick is set to retire.

However, it’s not the Englishman who necessarily needs replacing, it’s the Frenchman who needs either a partner or an alternative.

Pogba is United’s only creative midfielder with Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Scott McTominay all either holding midfielders or ball-winners.

Unfortunately, it’s not enough for a club of their size to only have one creative output in midfield, particularly since opposition teams often ask to be broken down.

The Red Devils have often looked at a loss for ideas when facing such teams and is another cause for their inconsistencies.

When Paul isn’t in form or available, Mourinho’s men have looked poor and have lacked any real kind of mobility in midfield.

If there was one defining point in Manchester United’s season where it all fell apart, it’s when the former Juventus star suffered an injury.

If Jose plans on playing a 4-3-3 formation next season then he needs someone alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic to provide mobility.

The former can’t be expected to be the creative output while also offering mobility and dynamism all at the same time with others requiring to take responsibility.

All the aforementioned midfielders are simply not good enough passers apart from perhaps Matic but it’s their off the ball movement that hurts United more than anything.

Should Jose Mourinho plan on sticking to the 4-2-3-1 formation, then he’ll need a player capable of fulfilling Pogba’s shoes whenever necessary.

Otherwise, United will continue to suffer when their club record signing isn’t available, whether due to injury, suspension or simply out of form.
