Ander Herrera has said that Michael Carrick holds all the attributes to succeed as a coach ahead of his Old Trafford swansong against Watford on Sunday afternoon.
Carrick, 36, confirmed in March that he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2017-18 season and become a part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at Manchester United.
After joining the club from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 for £18m, Carrick has made 463 appearances and won five Premier Leagues, an FA Cup, three League Cups, along with Champions League and Europa League winners medals.
Herrera has played and trained alongside Carrick since he arrived from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, and when asked about the role he said: “He’s the right person to be an assistant as he’s very calm and balanced.”
“If you have one guy next to you like that it really helps you. It’s one of the qualities he has that can make him a good manager in the future.”
Carrick has only started three games in all competitions this season amid health issues and the Spaniard believes stepping into the dugout next season will be the best move for him.
Herrera continued: “He never gets crazy happy and in the bad moments he keeps his head and tries to give the right advice to the team. That’s why I think he’s going to be a good manager in the future.”
United will be aiming to give Carrick a perfect send-off by winning their final Premier League game of the campaign this weekend to surpass the 80-point mark for the first time since 2013.
