Jose Mourinho has aimed a subtle dig at former Manchester United right-back and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville for his criticism of Scott McTominay.
Neville pinpointed McTominay during United’s lacklustre 0-0 draw against West Ham United earlier on in the week and even questioned whether the 21-year-old Scot was good enough for the club.
On Sky Sports following full-time at the London Stadium on Thursday, he said: “McTominay, when I watch him, I’m not sure he’s actually good enough on the ball to be a Man United midfield player. Is he sharp enough on the ball to be a Man United central midfield player?”
After watching United edge past Watford 1-0 on the final day of the Premier League season, in which McTominay started as part of a midfield three alongside Daley Blind and the retiring Michael Carrick, Mourinho stood up for the youngster he promoted to the first team.
Mourinho said: “If you want to be negative, you can always be, until the point that you say Scott McTominay which is a kid arrived here at 9 years old, is not good enough.”
These comments are clearly directed towards the former United man, who also said McTominay might be better utilised as a centre-back, so it’ll be interesting to see if he replies to Mourinho’s defence.
