Gary Neville has tipped Scott McTominay to ultimately morph into a central defender at Manchester United.
The Scot has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season, playing a vital role in big wins over Chelsea and Liverpool during the second half of the campaign.
He was handed his first start since March for the stalemate with West Ham United and produced a diligent performance in the middle.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville predicted that McTominay’s height and energy would eventually lead to him playing at centre back for Man United.
“McTominay, when I watch him, I’m not sure he’s actually good enough on the ball to be a Man United midfield player,” he said.
“I do think he’s the type that it’s good for him to play games in there – but I do wonder whether if actually he’s got more of a position at centre back eventually, the physicality that he has. He’s a big lad.
“Is he sharp enough on the ball to be a Man United central midfield player?”
McTominay’s application – his desire to improve and learn and give everything – has been the main pulling factor for Mourinho, who handed him a ‘Manager’s Player of the Year’ award last week at the club’s awards dinner.
His quality on the ball, however, falls short of what you’d expect from a United player: hardly poor and usually accurate, but hardly piercing or unpredictable.
And with Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic already fitting this category, you cannot help but wonder how McTominay fits in as a midfielder moving forward.
