Matteo Darmian is on the cusp of joining Juventus this summer, with only a few details remaining until the deal goes through, according to reports from Italy.
The defender has endured a frustrating campaign under Jose Mourinho, making only four starts in all competitions since the turn of the year.
A move back to Italy has been on the cards for some time and Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta admitted earlier this week that Darmian was a player the club wanted.
And according to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, Darmian has agreed to move back to Torino and will, somewhat amazingly, become a Juventus player in the next few days.
Darmian and the Premier League just never quite went together: the rabid, full throttle kick and rush nature of English football, played in a kind of frenzy, was not an environment in which the languid, attritional Italian could properly function let alone thrive.
To look at his performances this season – most notably against FC Basel in November and Bristol City in December – and then see Juventus express overt interest in him is something of a comical surprise to Man United fans, but Serie A works a different set of muscle groups, a different part of the brain.
He will feel much more at home, playing with teammates and for supporters who understand and can incorporate his more patient, defensively straightforward style in a way United fans never could. You can only hope he takes such an excellent change to reinvigorate his career.
