Jose Mourinho has made it clear following defeat to West Bromwich Albion that those who didn’t start will get a chance against AFC Bournemouth to stake their claim to play in the FA Cup semi-final.
The likes of Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are likely to be axed for both games after infuriating the boss with their performances against the Baggies.
This gives a number of fringe players to make a case to their boss for starting on Saturday with a solid performance against Eddie Howe’s side.
With that in mind, here are three players who Mourinho must start on Wednesday night.
The Frenchman came on in the second half at Old Trafford and, whilst far from perfect, at least injected some vitality into United’s performance. And following Sanchez’s poor display on Sunday, set to result in emission from the starting XI at Bournemouth, Martial has a real chance to show Mourinho who he deserves more opportunities in the team.
Eric Bailly
United’s back line is always stronger with the Ivorian on the pitch and leaping at every cross – something which could have come in handy on Sunday – and it will be crucial for him to enjoy a solid 90 minutes in preparation for taking on Harry Kane over the weekend.
Mourinho’s side lacked any sense of width or penetration in behind over the weekend, with Mata and Sanchez stepping on each other’s toes in the middle instead. It was painful to watch to say the very least, but Rashford should be looking at it as an opportunity.
He will get a chance to start and, more importantly, give United a sense of thrust moving forward and stretch the pitch ahead of taking on Spurs. The youngster hasn’t received many chances in recent times; he, along with Martial, cannot afford to waste this one.
