Manchester United have stepped up their efforts to secure reinforcements at right-back and left-back in the summer, with Jose Mourinho pinpointing Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose as a primary candidate, according to reports.
The 55-year-old will look to revamp his options at full-back ahead of probable departures for Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian over the transfer window.
He entertained the prospect of signing Rose last summer without making any concrete approach, but the Englishman looks set to leave the North London side following a campaign marred by a lack of opportunities under Mauricio Pochettino.
According to the Guardian‘s Jamie Jackson, Mourinho is keen to upgrade personnel at both right-back and left-back in the summer, and has identified Rose as one of his main targets.
The Portuguese notably mentioned Pep Guardiola’s £130m spending spree on full-backs back following a poor run of results in December, implying that United needed to do the same to match the vitality and core strength of the champions next season.
Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia – both 32 – are solid defensively but, unfortunately, not much more than that these days, and Mourinho is right to demand some serious investment in an area which has been in constant flux since the days of Patrice Evra and Rafael.
