Man Utd's Carrick downplays role in Pogba's brace vs Man City

Manchester United star Michael Carrick has admitted he was glad what he said helped Paul Pogba perform vs Manchester City.

The Frenchman helped his club secure a crazy comeback win vs their fierce rivals, grabbing two goals after the break to put his side back in the game.

Pogba later revealed that Carrick had actually given him solid advice at half time and he took it in his stride to help him turn the match around.

The Englishman didn’t actually feature in the match but has already shown a knack for coaching before he officially takes on the role next season.

Jose Mourinho offered him a place amongst the backroom staff and he’s accepted as he sets his sights on retiring from football.

According to Goal, Michael said to Sky Sports: “I just kept it simple and said ‘this is what you are’ and ‘this is what you’re good at’.”

“But listen, he [Pogba] scored two goals, so it’s not down to me. I’m glad I did [have an impact] because it shows little things do register with players.”

Paul had said that Michael Carrick told him to make more runs forward as no one would be willing to deal with him in the box in terms of the opposition players.

The advice turned out to be true with the former Juventus star grabbing both goals from deep runs into the box with the City players failing to deal with him twice.

Sir Alex Ferguson has always discussed how he kept things simple when it came to advice or half time team talks as he claimed it was easier for players to register.

Footballers are often too focussed on the match as well as pumped with adrenaline to fully register huge chunks of information in the short fifteen minutes break.
