Jose Mourinho has emphasised that Manchester United will not “go crazy” over the summer transfer window.
The manager has already stressed the need to reinforce his side’s central midfield ahead of Michael Carrick‘s retirement and Marouane Fellaini‘s probable departure.
He is also expected to address both full-back slots given the age of both Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, with Alex Sandro and Kieran Tierney emerging as targets.
Speaking after his side’s 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion, the 55-year-old insisted United wouldn’t “go crazy” but rather work towards improving “a little bit more”.
“We are not going to spend more than we can. We are not going to do anything crazy,” he said.
“We are just trying to improve a little bit more. That’s what we are going to try. Everybody will try to improve – like we did from last season. Last season we finished sixth and this season we are going to finish, hopefully, second.
“Next season, we are going to try to improve, but let’s see what happens. Maybe also City will invest massively and they don’t let the others close the gap to them, I don’t know.
“But it is not about us and them, it is about us and them and Liverpool and Arsenal and Chelsea and Spurs. It is not City and United. It is about the six.”
You could argue that the tone for this season was set by Manchester City all the way back in the summer, where Pep Guardiola ruthlessly and effectively splashed out on over £150m worth of talent at the back. Danilo, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Ederson all came in. The Spaniard realised the lack of depth and quality in that area and responded emphatically.
The only attacking addition they made was Bernardo Silva, and yet it has been this area of the pitch – the final third – where City’s play has been most revolutionised. Having smarter and stronger full-backs allowed for key players like Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva to work in better positions up the pitch and enjoy more space. The results have been manifold.
Mourinho will, of course, not want to overspend in the summer (he won’t be allowed to) but he does need to at least demonstrate the same determination to bolster his side’s attacking potential through investing heavily at the back.
