David de Gea 6 – Positioning could have been better for Sevilla’s second goal, which proved ultimately decisive, but did not have much hope with the first. Did well with a one-on-one chance at the end to stop things from getting even worse.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Once again kept tabs on the potentially dangerous Angel Correa and looked comfortable on the ball, albeit one dimensional coming forward.
Chris Smalling 5 – Enjoyed a solid opening hour or so but made a couple of unnecessary fouls and loose passes that ultimately paved the way for Sevilla to take advantage of Manchester United’s growing anxiety.
Eric Bailly 6 – Made a series of important tackles and blocks throughout the game but, crucially, crumbled with the rest of his players in the second half.
Ashley Young 5 – Miserably slow on the ball, unambitious going forward, and ultimately a bit flaky at the back – a microcosm of Man United’s performance.
Nemanja Matic 6 – Did the job that was asked of him, circulating the ball and creating a base from which to attack, but looked more and more fatigued as the game went on, clearly overwhelmed by the space afforded to Sevilla in the middle.
Marouane Fellaini 5 – Offered a reliable physical outlet and brought the home side up the pitch, but on his first start since November everything felt too slow at times.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Displayed his usual bursting energy on the break but lacked any real substance with his final pass.
Alexis Sanchez 6 – Played a central role in United’s decent start to the second half, moving the ball with precision and purpose, but once again had no effect in the final third.
Marcus Rashford 6 – The only player to bring genuine thrust and desire to United’s performance throughout the game. Gave absolutely everything – including the one reason for supporters to get off their seats – but lacked the right decision making.
Romeu Lukaku 5 – Claimed his 24th goal of the season when it did not matter. Apart from that, however, the Belgian had no presence in the box. First touch wasn’t up to scratch.
