Dwight Yorke has urged Marcus Rashford to create a collection of his best goals to watch during goal droughts to ensure his confidence doesn’t drop.
The young English striker has suffered in the last couple of months, starting just two Premier League games since Boxing Day after a spell of poor goalscoring form.
Anthony Martial’s fantastic purple patch around the festive period was also a factor in Rashford’s decreasing gametime, as well as the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window and the extent to which Jesse Lingard has been impressing.
Now in a minor goal drought, Rashford must take inspiration from his previous Man United goals, Yorke claims.
“This is still an early stage in your career and, if I was you, from past experiences, I would just have a collection of my goals and I’d keep reminding yourself of the things you can do, especially if you have a little period where you aren’t scoring,” Yorke told Rashford. speaking to Man United’s official club website.
“Have a selection of goals and get a feel-good factor about yourself. Even if you go through a drought, which everyone goes through, just go back and watch those goals.
“It gives you that buzz and a massive buzz. It puts that smile back on your face. It makes you think “damn I can do this stuff!” That is what I used to do and, trust me, it works.
That would be my advice. Just go back, remind yourself and look at the goals that you’ve scored, from the tap-ins to the wonder strikes. I would put a collection of them together, just for your private use.”
It’s an interesting technique, and a very simple one, from Yorke, and an insight into the small things top strikers can do to get themselves back on the right track when out-of-form.
