Sam Johnstone has noted that no decision has been made about his future at Manchester United as of yet.
The 24-year-old, who arrived at the club in 2009 but has never made a first team appearance, joined Aston Villa on loan in January 2016 and, following a shaky start, quickly acclimatised to life between the sticks at Villa Park.
He has continued to thrive for Steve Bruce’s side – currently third in the Championship – this season, starting in every single league game so far.
And Johnstone, reflecting on his future at Old Trafford, admitted that he wanted to continue playing regular football.
“I enjoy it here. I love playing football here and training every day,” he said. “But the truth is I’ve not spoken to anyone about it as of yet.”
“My plan is to finish off this season and then see what Manchester United and Aston Villa’s position is on the matter. I want to keep playing football. I’m enjoying the number of games I’m playing.
“At the moment, though, it’s very much a case of I’ve not spoken to anyone at United and we’ll see in the summer. But I do want to carry on playing as much football as possible.”
The Englishman faces something of a dilemma in June – a crossroads moment, if you will: does he double down with Villa, a side in impressive form and just four points off the automatic promotion spots, or return to a club he still holds dear in his heart?
Doing the latter would, you sense, serve as a step backwards. Why, after all, sacrifice the platform entrusted to him by Bruce in exchange for being third – or possibly even fourth behind Joel Pereira – at Old Trafford?
Either way, the 56 appearances under his belt for Villa have provided valuable experience and placed him in the shop window for other potential suitors further down the line.
