Insider reveals why Man United are excited about this youngster

Former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen has noted that insiders at the club are extremely excited about Scott McTominay.

The 21-year-old made his senior debut towards the end of last season and, following a strong pre-season, kept his place in the first team squad for the 2017/18 campaign.

He has made 11 starts under Mourinho so far this term, impressing supporters with resilient, disciplined displays against Sevilla and Chelsea.

And McQueen made it clear that the youngster has what it takes to establish himself at Old Trafford over the next few years.

“I’ve spoken to people at the club who talk glowing terms about him,” he said. “I think everybody is impressed.”

It’s not easy to get into that midfield and he’s keeping Paul Pogba out the side, and look at the money they paid for him.

“He’s getting regular game time at Manchester United in what is a immensely talented midfield. You have Fellaini, Pogba, Mata, Carrick.

“Carrick is going into coaching and Fellaini looks like he might be leaving the club so he could be a big player for Manchester United in the next few years. That’s why people are getting excited by him.”

There is no doubt that McTominay is an exciting prospect with the right attitude, but perhaps his performance against Crystal Palace – erratic, peripheral, tetchy, incomplete – was a reminder to all of us to have some perspective.

Following the Scot’s display against Chelsea talk has continued to surround his name, with the youngster even forced to decide which country he wants to represent when, really, the onus should have been on matters closer to home.

And while his no-show at Palace provides no cause for panic, it ought to remind us of the notion that, for all the promise already displayed, there remains a long way to go for the youngster, who won’t benefit from the hyperbole being thrown in his direction at this moment in time.
