Chelsea player ratings vs Crystal Palace - Willian continues to shine for the Blues

Chelsea picked up a much-needed three points in a game that was more one-sided than the scoreline suggests.

The Blues ran out 2-1 winners but dominated possession for large swathes of the game and had chance upon chance to increase their lead before Patrick van Aanholt pulled back a consolation goal for Crystal Palace to give the score a respectable edge.

Willian’s deflected effort gave Chelsea the lead after 25 minutes, and just seven minutes later a calamitous own goal by Martin Kelly put the Blues firmly in control heading into half-time.

Crystal Palace certainly created enough chances to get something from the game, but Christian Benteke, in particular, was wasteful in front of goal.

Former Chelsea youth graduate van Aanholt then set up a tense final few minutes when he slotted away his second goal in a week, having not scored all season previously.

Here are the player ratings:

Thibaut Courtois – 6, a poor pass accuracy and was easily beaten by van Aanholt, the Dutchman’s shot squirming under Courtois body. Had Palace been more clinical, putting more shots on target then Courtois may well have fared worse.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 8, incredibly good defensive numbers, although it’s a slight on Chelsea’s defenders also that Crystal Palace were allowed so many opportunities but Azpilicueta performed admirably – completing four tackles and six interceptions. He also completed one key pass.

Andreas Christensen – 6, Back to his best in terms of distribution. He had a pass accuracy of 96%, but only completed one tackle and interception as his positioning was again lacking, especially when tasked with marking Benteke.

Gary Cahill – 7, no tackles and interceptions but nine clearances. A clear indicator of the way Chelsea try and play out of defence and the tactic that is ultimately holding the Blues back. Fired in a long-range effort that whistled past Wayne Hennessey’s far post.

Davide Zappacosta – 7, had so much joy down the right, putting in cross after cross for Giroud – playing an incredibly high 14 crosses during the 90 minutes. His rating would be higher had the accuracy of his crosses been higher than it was – with just three of his 14 crosses finding their target, although one of them did lead Martin Kelly to slice the ball into his own net to double Chelsea’s lead.

N’Golo Kante – 7.5, a nice assist for Willian is an example of an improved attacking display from the usually conservative midfielder – a couple of key passes and dribbles also adding to that opinion. All six of his long balls found their target and he had a 90% pass accuracy.

Cesc Fabregas – 7.5, completed three key passes and in an advanced role, he thrived in providing passes for Eden Hazard, Willian and Giroud who with a bit of luck would’ve made better use of the opportunities created. His defensive stats were also identical to Kante’s, while his seven crosses was an unusually high figure for a player who tends to play just through the middle of the park.

Marcos Alonso – 6, nothing spectacular from Alonso as play remained firmly out wide on the right due to the acres of space left unmarked by the Palace defenders. He came close with a volleyed shot at goal that narrowly missed the target, his touch let him down on a couple of occasions.

Willian – 9, another superb display from Willian, who has continued to excel this season, surpassing his previous best goal tally for Chelsea by scoring his 13th goal this season – a lovely albeit deflected 20-yard shot.

To be fair his goal was not for a lack of trying, as he attempted to catch out Hennessey on six different occasions, with four finding the target and usually the gloves of the Palace keeper. He also completed eight dribbles, a game-high alongside Hazard, although he didn’t draw a single foul.

Olivier Giroud – 8, could one man get any more unlucky. His shot in the first half seemed destined for the back of the net was it not for the goal line heroics of Kelly – who cleared the ball of the line from what seemed an impossible position. His shot late on in the second-half then struck the inside of the post and was one of seven shots the Frenchman produced in the hunt for his first Premier League goal for Chelsea.

Eden Hazard – 8, as aforementioned Hazard also completed eight dribbles but unlike Willian, his running was more direct and therefore provoked five more fouls than the Brazilian’s style.

Subs:

Alvaro Morata – 6, hardly influenced the game other than picking up another needless yellow card. Giroud outshone him on so many levels today and going into Wednesday’s trip to Barcelona Conte has many striking issues to mull over before picking his starting eleven.

Tiemoue Bakayoko – 5, had very few minutes on the pitch but still manage to concede a goal that could’ve sparked a Palace comeback.

Pedro – 5, his only contribution was a single tackle but again he had very little time to impose himself on proceedings.
