Arsene Wenger has admitted the January signings may have affected Alexandre Lacazette’s confidence after the Frenchman’s poor performance on Saturday (via The Mirror).
It was a disappointing end to an infuriating afternoon when Alexandre Lacazette failed to find the back of the net in the final moments of the 1-0 defeat to Spurs.
The Frenchman has scored just one goal in his last 14 matches for Arsenal despite what was a relatively good start to his career in North London.
The 26-year-old made his £46 million move to the Emirates in the summer but his problems in front of goal have only been amplified by Arsenal’s business in January.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang became Arsenal’s newest club-record signing when he made the move from Borussia Dortmund in January and has since taken Lacazette’s place in the team.
The former Lyon man looked utterly lacking in confidence on the weekend and now, Arsene Wenger has admitted that Aubameyang’s arrival may have contributed to that.
“Maybe the confidence is not at its highest because he has seen a competitor coming in,” Wenger said.
“But, for him, one against one with the keeper, he is still a good goal-scorer. He has gone through difficult periods before.
“He works hard in training, works on his finishing. I don’t know what happened, did he not touch the ball well? It can happen, it is a fraction of a second. But he created two chances. That is a quality as well.
“He will score goals. He is a goal-scorer, he scored goals in his whole career. He will score again.”
Alexandre Lacazette can certainly feel a little hard done by over how he has been treated since coming to Arsenal. The Frenchman is still a fine player and a good goalscorer and hopefully, he will find that scoring touch again soon.
