New Manchester United signing Alexis Sanchez is the perfect player for the club, former-captain Wayne Rooney has claimed.
The Chilean forward netted his first goal for the club at the weekend, tapping in after seeing his penalty saved against Huddersfield Town. That established a two-goal cushion for the Reds, which they maintained until the final whistle.
Rooney provided insight into a huge number of things as a guest on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, and compared Sanchez to his former-teammate Carlos Tevez, who he shared a wonderfully effective relationship with for a couple of years at Old Trafford.
“For me, Sanchez is the perfect player for United,” Rooney said. “He’s got aggression, passion, desire and you can see he’s a winner.”
Rooney said that Sanchez provides United with what they’ve been missing as a said. “I think that’s what United have lacked,” he said of Sanchez’s qualities.
“He’s a winner. They are the players you want, almost like when Tevez joined United. Them players lift the other players and get an extra 10 per cent of the players around him. I think Alexis Sanchez will do that.”
Sanchez’s mentality will hopefully rub off on a relatively young squad at United. Even key players like Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku are under the age of 25 while Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly, Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are 23 and under.
The 29-year-old’s experience and drive and determination should help lift the young players around him the Eric Cantona role at United.
