Graeme Souness has hailed Romelu Lukaku’s goalscoring record in a Manchester United team that creates fewer chances than other top sides.
The former-Liverpool man has often been critical of Lukaku’s displays since the Belgian striker joined Man United for an initial £75m from Everton last summer.
But now Souness represents one of many watchers on who are being convinced by Lukaku’s goalscoring and non-goalscoring contributions to the side.
He netted the equaliser for Jose Mourinho’s side on Sunday afternoon against Premier League champions Chelsea before assisting Jesse Lingard’s winner at Old Trafford with fantastic footwork and an accurate cross.
“I’m a fan. 40 games now, 22 goals, it’s the hardest place to play football [as a striker],” Souness told Sky Sports after the game on Sunday.
“He does a great job.”
Souness said Lukaku should be given more credit for his 22 goals this season given the side he’s been playing in in comparison to other prolific forwards like Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool’s Mo Salah and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.
“Lukaku is not playing in a team that’s filled with cute and clever passers of the ball. A lot of them are crumbs he’s feeding on,” Souness added.
The 24-year-old’s hold-up play has improved massively in the last three months. After a woeful performance in the Manchester derby, Lukaku has upped his game and returned to goalscoring ways as well as adding to his game.
His assist for Lingard, where he moved through two Chelsea defenders before crossing perfectly, was an example of that improvement. It’s having an effect on his reputation, with pundits now recognising his qualities aside from goalscoring, something that Jamie Carragher has also admitted.
