Nemanja Matic has described Premier League games as ‘war’ for Manchester United.
The Reds currently sit 13 points behind cross-city title rivals Manchester City after the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley earlier on Saturday.
That gap has been reduced from 15 points thanks to Burnley’s late equaliser. However, it seems like an almost unassailable advantage for Man City, who manager Jose Mourinho effectively conceded the title to ahead of the weekend. Mourinho told reporters that United’s aim was to finish second, above everyone else in the league.
United beat Huddersfield Town comfortably on Saturday afternoon with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.
“This win is good for our confidence and we have to fight ’til the end,” Matic said after the game.
“Every game in the Premier League is a war. We have to stay focused until the end.”
If that’s the mentality that Mourinho is instilling into his players, it’s the correct one. While he may admit to the journalists that it’s unrealistic for people to consider United as still in the title race, the attitude that it remains possible has to be maintained in the dressing room.
Matic has had a poor few months and was pretty woeful in midweek in United’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur but will hopefully regain his early season excellent form as the Reds enter a key part of the season.
