Jose Mourinho has described Scott McTominay starting for Manchester United on Saturday against Huddersfield Town as “fantastic” for the club and for football.
The Portuguese went on to label it as a ‘beautiful’ thing and was effusive in his praise for McTominay. The Anglo-Scot wasn’t expected to have a big role this season but has consistently been involved in the first team matchday squads as well as making 11 appearances already, six of them being starts.
McTominay has been an assured presence in midfield considering his age and has earned the faith and trust of Mourinho.
“I think he’s fantastic,” the Man United boss said, having given McTominay a chance by dropping starman Paul Pogba to the substitutes bench.
“He doesn’t play like a young boy playing. He’s very mature. I think he’s an amazing player.”
Mourinho rarely praises players with such enthusiasm, but McTominay has earned it through his performances. He’s often been unnoticeable, which is often wanted given his role in the side.
“It’s beautiful that a player arrives at United 9-10 years old & plays in the first team. I couldn’t be happier with his performance,” Mourinho continued.
Having dropped Pogba to the bench to accommodate McTominay coming into the side, Mourinho was asked about putting an £89m player on the bench for a ‘kid’.
“I don’t see it that way. I always try to do what I think is best for the team. I prefer to look at it as a kid who turned up at nine years of age with his mum and 10 or 11 years later is playing in the league at Old Trafford.”
It’s exactly what United fans want, academy graduates playing for the first team. Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Pogba are established first teamers now and McTominay is quickly becoming that, too.
