Man Utd star discusses 'powerful' Munich Air Disaster service

Manchester United veteran Michael Carrick has discussed the club’s ‘powerful’ service that honoured the victims of the Munich Air Disaster.

The experienced midfielder was in attendance and was one of many stars who paid their respects to those who passed away on the 60th anniversary of the incident.

It was a day that a lot of club rivalries were cast aside as Liverpool, Manchester City and many other clubs around the world expressed their deepest sympathies with United.

Club legends Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton were also present making sure, as ever, that everyone remembers the history of the team.

Carrick himself admitted to not realising how important it all was to the Red Devils until he actually arrived and now he discusses how he felt on the day of the anniversary.

According to Manchester United’s official website, Michael said to MUTV: “It was very fitting, a beautiful service – powerful and emotional.

“For me, it was emotional sitting next to Sir Bobby [Charlton] and trying to come to terms with what he’s been through and what was going through his mind.

“It was tough but a pleasure to be part of it and as I said I thought it was very fitting. When I came to the club I was aware of it [the disaster], I’d heard the stories and my Dad had told me about it, but it wasn’t until I came to the club that you have that feeling of what it means to everyone here and how important it is.

“Today was very powerful and for the younger lads and for the lads who haven’t been at the club too long it’s huge. It’s great that everyone could be here together today because we’re all in it together, it’s what makes this great club so special.

“It was such a tragic event and a very sad event, but it’s commemorated in such a great way and that carries on year after year and always will.”

The media were of course present during the service but it was good to see many supporters still show up to pay their respects 60 years after the incident.

More and more fans seem to show up each year which will only help in making sure future generations never forget what happened that fateful night.

Manchester United and Huddersfield players also observed a minute’s silence ahead of the match at Old Trafford but it was yesterday that the anniversary was properly given it’s due service.

Michael Carrick is expected to retire at the end of the season and join the club’s coaching staff, hopefully preserving the history of the side even more.
