Wayne Rooney reflects on what it was like to play with Cristiano Ronaldo

Wayne Rooney has been reflecting on playing with Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.

The trio comprised to create the fiercest attack in the country, with Ronaldo claiming 31 goals in as many Premier League appearances during the 2007/08 season to claim the Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo and Tevez left for Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively in 2009, but the dynamic between the three players is still remembered as one of the finest examples of fluid, interchanging, ruthless attacking football ever seen in the Premier League.

And Rooney, speaking on Monday Night Football, shed light on how he ensured the trio got the best out of each other at Old Trafford.

Rooney on Ronaldo: “We had a good compromise because me and Tevez would probably do a lot more defensive work than Cristiano but we knew in the big games and moments he would win them.” #mufc [sky]

Almost a decade has elapsed since the trio stepped onto the same pitch together and nobody would contest that this club hasn’t seen a better attacking synthesis at Old Trafford since.

None of them were strikers in the fullest sense of the word but they comprised to create a devastatingly unpredictable and constant problem for defenders.

The way they roamed around the pitch in perfect tandem was an exhibition of natural chemistry and, more notably, the benefits you can receive as a manger if you entrust talented players with the freedom to make their own decisions going forward.
