Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone would ‘consider’ an approach from Manchester United to become manager at Old Trafford one day.
The Times report that although Simeone is coveted by Man United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea, Simeone wouldn’t be interested in taking over at Stamford Bridge in the summer and would favour a move to Manchester if he is to enter English football.
The 47-year-old considers his limited English language abilities a serious issue, but would seriously consider any opportunity to manage United due to the stature of the club.
Simeone allegedly discussed taking over the reigns at United in 2014 when the Reds were looking for a replacement for David Moyes after the Scotsman’s woeful seven-month spell in charge, having replaced Sir Alex Ferguson. The club opted for Louis van Gaal instead.
It seems incredibly unlikely that Simeone will now be United manager after current boss Jose Mourinho penned a new contract at the club to extend his current deal to 2020.
If he sees that out, it will be Mourinho’s longest single stint at one club in his career which has now stretched over almost two decades.
Simeone is one of Europe’s most highly-regarded coaches. His work with Atleti has been viewed in great esteem, having taken a club that have been overshadowed by the two Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid and transforming them into one of the big boys themselves.
Atleti lifted the La Liga title ahead of their richer rivals in 2014 and were beaten in the UEFA Champions League final twice in three years, losing out to local rivals Real in both 2014 and 2016.
The Argentine has two-and-a-half years left on his deal at Atleti, who have moved into their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium this season.
