Chelsea player hits out at Antoine Conte after losing to Jose Mourinho

Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois has questioned Antoino Conte’s decision to take off Eden Hazard during Manchester United’s 2-1 win over the champions on Sunday.

The Belgian forward, who had set up Willian’s 32nd minute goal, was taken off after 73 minutes for Pedro.

Jesse Lingard headed home a dramatic winner just two minutes later, and Conte later explained his decision to take off Hazard by citing “tactical reasons” – that tactic seemingly being to deflate his side’s attacking resolve by taking off their best player.

And Courtois, when asked about the substitution, was clearly exasperated by his manager’s decision.

“I have no explanation for the substitution of Hazard,” he said.

“I had not expected him to take him off but it is a choice of the manager. He must explain. I can’t look into his head.

“Players like Eden should have 90 minutes on the pitch. He can always bring something extra offensive.”

The worst part of this for Conte is that Courtois is completely right. Players like Hazard, especially in a big game, simply have to remain on the pitch throughout, and it was indeed telling that the West London side hardly produced anything going forward after taking him off.

And the Italian can hardly hit out at his keeper for this, although he likely will: every Chelsea player, even Pedro, will be thinking the same thing, growingly frustrated at their manager’s diminishing sense of endeavour and tactical vitality that proved so crucial last season.

As a result, Conte will leave England – most likely in the summer, possibly earlier – having learned a lesson he probably already knew prior to arriving from Italy: to never, ever pick a fight with Jose Mourinho.

Man United lose out on big summer transfer target: report

Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann has reached an agreement to join Barcelona in the summer, according to reports from Spain.

The French forward was on the verge of moving to Old Trafford last summer, only to ultimately pledge his allegiance to Atletico Madrid out of loyalty to Diego Simeone, who couldn’t replace him until January.

Jose Mourinho continued to express interest in Griezmann but Barcelona have become frontrunners in the race to sign him in light of the 26-year-old’s preference to keep his young family in Spain.

And according to Spanish media outlet Catalunya Radio, a reliable source, an agreement has been reached with Greizmann ahead of joining the Nou Camp in the summer.

United never really stood much of a chance once Barcelona entered the race for Griezmann and started to take his  family out for dinners – a tactic Atletico fervently protested against – in an attempt to reach a comprehensive gentleman’s agreement with the Frenchman’s camp.

Nevertheless, following the signing of Alexis Sanchez combined with Mourinho’s insistence that he wouldn’t buy any further attacking players in the summer, this saga feels like a thing of the past – a move that made sense and came very close to happening but now has died out, with United’s emphasis now on the midfield and full-back areas.

Pundit feels sympathy for this Man Utd star

Pundit Alan Shearer has admitted that he feels sympathetic for Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku due to the lack of service received.

The Belgian has managed to score over 20 goals this season across all competitions but has still been heavily criticised by many.

In his first campaign at the club, Lukaku couldn’t have wished for a better goals record and will surely wonder what he must do to gain his due respect.

At least the striker will have some relief in knowing that his manager trusts him fully and is completely pleased with his performances.

Shearer though feels sorry for Romelu, having played as a striker himself, he understands what it feels like to not receive the ball as often as he’d like.

According to the Sport Review, Alan said to BBC Sport: “I do have a little bit of sympathy for him [Lukaku] because sometimes the way Man Utd play and the way Mourinho wants them to play with either Herrera or Matic.

“Once the midfielder gets the ball not always are their first thought is ‘can I get the ball forward’, sometimes their first thought is ‘I’ll go to the left, or I’ll go back or I might even go to the right’.

“But, if it were to happen more often and look forward first and play that ball forward that makes it so much easier for a centre forward to cause problems.”

The pundit’s words have some truth to them but there’s also parts that aren’t necessarily accurate or fair to the United midfielders.

The fact he chose both Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic is a little unfair on both the players considering the role Jose Mourinho is playing both in.

The Serbian has been a holding midfielder whose main job is to protect the defence, win the ball back and lay it off to a more creative, influential player such as Paul Pogba.

Herrera meanwhile is a little more at fault than Matic is but still is expected by his manager to play the role of winning the ball back and allowing the Red Devils’ forwards to express themselves.

Mourinho doesn’t have any other midfielder that’s similar to Pogba which is perhaps why he was so eager on trying to keep Andreas Pereira at the club.

Former Man Utd boss laments Mourinho's treatment of Schweinsteiger

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Jose Mourinho treated Bastian Schweinsteiger poorly when he was at the club.

The Dutchman initially signed the German before he was sacked, leaving the midfielder’s future up in the air with the Portuguese’s arrival.

Mourinho immediately made it clear that he would only choose one experienced, veteran midfielder to remain at the club and made the call to keep fan favourite Michael Carrick on board.

Schweinsteiger was then isolated from the first team squad and made to train with the youngsters until he eventually made the switch to the MLS.

Van Gaal believes that the World Cup winner didn’t warrant the treatment he received but did admit that he was physically incapable of playing anymore.

According to the Daily Star, Louis said to Sport Bild: “Schweinsteiger was older, of course, but not too old. Still, his body was not able to keep up with the high demands of Premier League.

“Bayern sold him to us as fit player but, in reality, physically he had reached the end. How Mourinho treated him after me, Schweini did not deserve this.

“But it also explains how things were with Schweinsteiger. It’s a shame because he is a player like Luis Enrique, Mark van Bommel or Philipp Lahm, a character always present on the pitch.”

To the credit of Bastian, he remained thoroughly professional throughout, so much so that Jose brought him back in from the cold much to the delight of fans.

Still, it was transparent that the former Bayern man was surplus to requirement and that it was important he was moved on quickly.

Bastian Schweinsteiger was a living, model player of Louis’ era at the club and if Jose Mourinho wanted the club to move on from the past, it would be necessary to see him go.

The former Chelsea manager did get his wish eventually and did publicly state that he regrets treating the midfielder the way he did.

Everything that happened was a testament to both characters- Schweinsteiger with his classy behaviour and Mourinho being man enough to admit his mistake.

Neville believes this Man Utd star is their only world-class player

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes that David de Gea is the club’s only world-class player much to some fans’ disbelief.

Jose Mourinho’s squad boast the likes of Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Juan Mata among other stars but it appears only one has caught the former defender’s eye.

De Gea has received glowing plaudits once more this season for his ever impressive performances and he could yet again win United’s player of the year award.

Neville has played with plenty of the club’s previous world class talents, most recently Cristiano Ronaldo, so it’s quite telling that he picked out the Spaniard from the rest.

The pundit explained that while the Red Devils may possess other world-class talent, it’s only David who is performing to a world-class level consistently.

According to the Daily Mail, Gary said to Goal: “De Gea’s the only world-class player Manchester United have got. You could maybe say Sanchez, but not at Manchester United yet, even if he has been at a level for the last five or six years that you would say is world class.

“De Gea’s the only player Manchester United have got at this moment in time that I would say has performed for the club at a world-class level.

“But to me de Gea is their stand-out player in terms of world standard at the club without a shadow of a doubt.”

Paul Pogba is a player who most Manchester United fans would believe is a world-class talent as well, especially due to having witnessed some of his top performances.

However, the term ‘world-class’ has often been thrown around by observers of the beautiful game far too easily and should take a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s book in terms of what it means to be a player of that ability.

The legendary Scotsman believed only a player who would easily slot into any of the world’s best clubs could be considered world-class.

David de Gea certainly fits that description and it could be argued that Pogba doesn’t necessarily fall into the same category, or any other United player for that matter.

Jose Mourinho left frustrated after Manchester United board does this with Anthony Martial

Jose Mourinho has been left concerned by the Manchester United’s board inability to wrap up contract negotiations with a number of key players,

The Portuguese manager is worried that Marcos Rojo and Anthony Martial are yet to receive new terms from Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward or Matt Judge, head of corporate finance.

Mourinho reportedly feels that such events could create an ill feeling within the squad given the huge new deals of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku as well as existing mega-contracts of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

The Daily Mail reveal that Rojo and Martial, two players liked by Mourinho but who are both out of contract at the end of the 2018/19 season, are yet to receive offers from Woodward or Judge that will allow serious negotiations to get underway.

United do have the option of triggering a one-year contract extension clause in Martial’s deal, reducing the rush, but Mourinho is keen to avoid any ill feeling.

The pair both earn around £70,000 and, in an unsurprising consequence of Sanchez’s enormous £350,000 contract, have both requested a pay rise.

Martial is particular is reported by the Mail to feel undervalued by the lack of movement on a new deal. He has been left worried that Sanchez’s arrival will reduce his playing time and has delayed buying a new house in Manchester.

With interest from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, and potentially Real Madrid, too, United have to ensure Martial is tied down to a new long-term deal soon.

Rojo, meanwhile, suffered a serious knee ligament injury at the end of last season and is still yet to cement a regular place in the first-choice back line, but is liked by Mourinho and has had interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Big development in future of Manchester United midfielder with important summer looming

Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini is now expected to leave Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old’s contract at the club expires at the end of the season, and with no possibility of triggering a one-year extension in that deal, Man United have been left with no option but to offer Fellaini new terms.

The Mirror report, though, that United have done that too late, and left Fellaini with a desire to leave the club rather than extend his five-year spell at Old Trafford.

Fellaini was left frustrated by United not approaching him with a new deal sooner, and the club are now preparing themselves for his departure at the end of the season.

He’s currently out for at least another month with a serious knee injury that has kept him out of regular action since January, having already missed the whole of December through injury.

Once scapegoated and heavily criticised by United fans and pundits alike, Fellaini has improved at United and won round said critics with great determination, becoming a less unreliable player having once been a liability in the side.

Fellaini has clubs interested in Turkey, Spain and Italy, with Galatasaray heavily linked in the last three months.

Manager Jose Mourinho has been desperate to keep his midfielder, who he has shown great faith in at times, and sad as such to reporters earlier this season, but his comments a month ago that all parties involved were keen for a new contract to be agreed seem misguided with United officials accepting Fellaini’s time at the club is up.

While that means Mourinho will need to look for a new midfielder in the transfer window, it’s likely the Portuguese will make his frustrations clear to the board about the inability to tie Fellaini down to a new deal.

Report: Real Madrid star likely to complete summer transfer with Chelsea a possible destination

Gareth Bale is seeming increasingly likely to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer as the board at Real Madrid are reportedly keen on him leaving, with Chelsea being strongly linked to the Welshman, according to Don Balon.

Real Madrid are apparently keen on Bale to go but for a lower fee but for a player to make their way to the Spanish capital, such as Eden Hazard who has been closely linked with a move to Real and also plays in a similar position to Bale.

However, it is believed that Bale is against this idea and although he is ready to leave Madrid, he will go for a fee and not be part of a deal.

Denis Doyle/Getty Images Sport

Bale is reportedly most keen on a return to the Premier League, where he played his best football at Chelsea’s rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Antonio Conte and Chelsea are said to be prepared to let Hazard leave Chelsea for the Spanish giants as long as they get the Brit to play at Stamford Bridge, a move which Bale would be keen on according to Spanish sources.

Bale will be fighting for qualification to the Champions League next season, with Los Blancos struggling domestically, having lost 1-0 at Espanyol in their last match.

They are, however, 3-1 up against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League, a competition which Bale has won three times in Spain. If he were to win it a fourth, it could be his last game in Real white before a move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea make contact with Napoli to sign 24-year-old wanted by Man Utd and Real Madrid

Antonio Conte has never really been fully comfortable with his fullback options during his near-two seasons at Chelsea, with a lack of depth on either flank a cause for concern at various points during his management.

This season, to provide competition with Victor Moses at right wing-back and Marcos Alonso on the left side, the Blues signed Davide Zappacosta from Torino in the summer after missing out on Sergi Roberto and Kyle Walker, and added Emerson Palmieri from Roma in January following a failed attempt to bring Juventus’ Alex Sandro to the Premier League.

Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images Sport

In the case of Zappacosta, the Italy international hasn’t really been particularly impressive whenever he’s broken into the side and Chelsea are said to be interested in replacing him in the summer and have made an enquiry to sign Napoli fullback Elseid Hysaj, according to ESPN.

Hysaj has been one of the standout fullbacks in Serie A over the last few seasons with the Albanian being a key contributor to Napoli’s rise back into title contention this campaign.

The report claims that Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Madrid are all also interested in signing the defender.

Arsene Wenger Has Responded To Gary Neville's Arsenal Criticism

Arsene Wenger Responds To Gary Neville’s Arsenal Criticism

Arsene Wenger has today responded to Gary Neville’s criticism of the Arsenal players’ performance in the Carabao Cup final (via Arsenal.com).

It was simple to pick a few faults in Arsenal’s performance in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Gunners were toothless in attack and embarrassing defensively which is why their performance attracted so much justified criticism.

Gary Neville was one of the most vocal on that front during his co-commentary of the match for Sky Sports.

“Ramsey. Xhaka. Ozil. You’re walking on a football pitch at Wembley. Why are you walking? You’re a disgrace. An absolute disgrace,” Neville said on-air.

Now, Arsene Wenger has responded to this harsh – and undoubtedly justified – criticism from the former Manchester United captain.

You find in every single game, on both sides, moments where a player doesn’t track,” Wenger said in his pre-match press conference.

“Why has he made two runs before to go in behind and was exhausted, or did he not track because he didn’t want to? That is different.

“I believe we have to live with that criticism and respond together like we always do. We got to the final and you don’t get there by coincidence, you have to fight to get there and we did.

“We didn’t play against a poor team in the semi-final, we played against Chelsea and we have shown that we can fight. You have to acknowledge as well that Man City are a quality team.”

It’s difficult to side with a former Manchester United captain over the club’s own manager but Gary Neville’s criticism of the Arsenal team was entirely justified. The Gunners were pathetic in the second-half 0f Sunday’s final and were lucky the score was kept to 3-0.

Manchester United confident of huge new deal for world-class player with Real Madrid interested

There is a confidence at Manchester United that world-class goalkeeper David de Gea will agree to a new deal at the club before the end of the season.

The Spaniard has been perennially linked with a return to his home city of Madrid to play for European Champions Real, and came tantalisingly close to leaving Man United in a £35m deal in 2015.

That deal fell through, and United are now keen to tie De Gea down once more to ensure they keep the three-time United Player of the Year winner and the man who has saved them on so many occasions this season.

United have the option of triggering a one-year contract extension clause in De Gea’s current deal that would extend it to 2020, but at this stage, the 27-year-old’s deal expires in 2019.

Jorge Mendes, De Gea’s representatives, and United have held “positive talks,” according to the Daily Mail, who suggest United believe there will no problems in getting De Gea to sign a new £220,000-a-week deal to keep him at Old Trafford.

De Gea himself has been speaking positively regarding life in Manchester and playing for United in the last couple of seasons, but the fear that he will finally leave the club and be snatched away by Los Blancos will never leave United fans.

A new long-term deal would go some way to achieving that and, more importantly, would calm down any speculation this summer that will be spreading should he not commit his future to the club.

Chelsea set to receive fresh interest in attacker after rejecting January approach, Man Utd linked

Chelsea set to miss out on Italy international this summer, had €40m bid rejected

According to Calciomercato, Chelsea target, Alessio Romagnoli, is set to sign a new contract at AC Milan, scuppering The Blues’ chances of signing the central defender.

AC Milan rejected a bid worth €40m for Romagnoli from Chelsea back in 2016, and it is now looking likely that the West London side will miss out on the Italian defender yet again.

With Antonio Conte falling out with David Luiz this season and Gary Cahill starting to lose his abilities, Chelsea are in the market for another central defender and Romagnoli was identified as a possible arrival this coming summer.

Catherine Ivill/Getty Images Sport

Romagnoli is set for big things in the future, and he already looks very comfortable in the AC Milan defence next to another former Chelsea target, Leonardo Bonucci, which will face Chelsea rivals Arsenal in the next round of the Europa League, which will test how good the young defender is, especially in big games.

Wenger Provides Update On Jack Wilshere's Contract

Wenger Provides Update On Jack Wilshere’s Contract

Arsene Wenger has provided another update on Jack Wilshere’s contract at the club and player continue to negotiate a new deal (via Arsenal.com).

Despite reports that a deal was agreed on by both parties a few weeks ago, the situation around Jack Wilshere’s contract is still unclear.

The midfielder’s current deal expires in the summer and many expected that the resolutions of the situations with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez would lead to a quick turnaround for Wilshere.

That has not happened and Arsene Wenger was again quizzed about Wilshere’s new deal in his pre-match press conference.

“It’s progressing,” Wenger said before being asked if he was confident that an agreement would be reached.

“Yes, but the decision belongs to him,” the boss went on.

“At the end of the day, you have to respect the decision of the player. Our desire is clear, is expressed, is numbered and after that, the player has to find satisfaction as well.”

So, it seems that the ball is very much in Wilshere’s court regarding the negotiations. Everyone Arsenal fan wants the 26-year-old to stay for many years to come, it’s just up to the club to get it done.

Despite facing one another in the Carabao Cup final just a few days ago, Arsenal are preparing to take on Manchester City once again.

This time, it’s a Premier League fixture with Arsenal looking to gain some ground on the best side in the league.

At his pre-match press conference, Arsene Wenger was asked about Nacho Monreal after the Spaniard limped off during Sunday’s defeat to Manchester City.

“He is out for the two games on Thursday and Sunday, certainly out,” Wenger said.

“He might be out for two more, Milan and maybe even one more. He had an inflamed back, a disc problem. The rest, everybody is fit.”

It’s a blow to lose Nacho Monreal considering how impressive the Spaniard has been in recent months. Monreal has been one of the few bright sparks of what has been a pretty dismal season at the Emirates.

Belgian star explains why he would not sign for Chelsea

Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has explained exactly why he elected to remain at the Italian club rather than make a move to join his long-term admirer Antonio Conte at Chelsea, according to the Sports Bible.

He has been one of the best midfielders around Europe for a number of years now but has up to this point always remained keen on staying at his current club Roma.

The 29-year-old had heavy links with the Blues throughout the summer but the move failed to happen as Conte didn’t get the chance to get the target of players which he wanted to at that stage.

Paolo Bruno/Getty Images Sport

The midfielder has played a vital role for Roma so far this season featuring in 28 games which has included scoring two goals and will play a key role in helping them turn round their Champions League tie.

He spoke about his transfer situation from the summer:

I could have gone to Chelsea and many other clubs, but starting something knew when you are 28, 29, in a new culture, another lifestyle, that’s not for me.

I prefer to stay where I feel good. If money were my only motivation, I would have changed clubs many times and my salary would have grown, but my first priority is to live well.

You need to live well and be happy playing where you are and I have both of those things here. Everything is perfect; my family is happy in Rome.

He went onto talk about the culture in Rome and what he most likes about it:

There are lots of good restaurants and it’s a good place to go shopping. When friends or family come to visit, you can send them almost anywhere.

I’m liked at the club and the supporters are behind me. I’ve given a lot on the field and I get a lot of respect for that.

As a footballer, that’s one of the best things you can get. I grew up in Antwerp, but I became a man in Italy. As things stand, I can see myself living in Rome in later life.

Chelsea star frustrated with Conte

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was left confused over Antonio Conte’s decision to take off Eden Hazard in their 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday.

Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge has looked bleak in recent weeks, with rumours of player unrest at the club, and now the situation has seemed to get worse, after losing to their top four rivals, Manchester United, he has now annoyed his No. 1 goalkeeper.

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images Sport

The Belgian goalkeeper had this to say about the situation:

After our goal, we conceded a counter-attacking goal just like last Tuesday but in the second half we had less of the ball, but even then we should never have lost this match. If you do not do the small things well in top matches, you lose, which is what happened today [Sunday]

I have no explanation for the sub of Hazard. I had not expected him to take him off but it is a choice of the manager. He must explain. I can’t look into his head. Players like Eden should have 90 minutes on the pitch. He can always bring something extra offensive.

Courtois has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer and this could be one of the final straws is his decision over whether he stays at Chelsea or joins Los Blancos.

Pundit explains why Liverpool would win the league with David de Gea

Former Arsenal midfielder believes that Liverpool would win the Premier League with David de Gea between the sticks.

The Spaniard has further strengthened his case for being the best keeper in the world this season by leading the table for clean sheets (15) in the Premier League.

Only Barcelona, yet to lose in La Liga, have more clean sheets than Man United this season, while Liverpool continue to fluctuate between the mediocre pair of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

And Parlour, speaking earlier this week, opined that Liverpool would be a genuine title contender with De Gea as their keeper.

“If Liverpool can find a target like David de Gea they have every chance of winning the league,” he said.

“You always have to have a good goalkeeper, at times they keep you in games, when I was at Arsenal, Seaman and Lehmann kept us in games, they didn’t make mistakes at the wrong time.

“Liverpool goalkeepers have made big mistakes at the wrong time and that’s cost them.”

De Gea has conceded a total of 19 goals this season, but based on xG data for the shots he has faced, the average keeper would have conceded 33 times. And this, somewhat unsurprisingly, is the biggest differential for any keeper in the Premier League.

A pretty good stat, and also the key to understanding why United, despite not knowing their best team and often attacking without a clear idea, remain second and ahead of the rapturous Liverpool in the table after 28 rounds of games.

The sheer presence of the Spaniard between the sticks – his capacity, as seen against Sevilla, to actively diminish the confidence of attackers – contrasts markedly with two keepers at Anfield, neither of which will never manage to engender the same sense of assurance and control to help their defence.

Chelsea make risky decision over Courtois future

Chelsea are prepared to put their contract negotiations with Thibaut Courtois on hold until near the end of March, according to the Evening Standard.

The Blues’ intentions to renew Courtois’ deal at Stamford Bridge has been well publicised for some time now but talks appeared to have reached an impasse, with the Belgian referring to how he’d one day like to return to La Liga.

However, it seems a decision will be made by Chelsea to delay their discussions with Courtois until after they have played out their crucial clashes with Barcelona and Leicester City in the Champions League and FA Cup respectively.

Antonio Conte’s side face a vital period ahead of the end of the season and will need to be at their best if they are to finish in the top four of the Premier League and progress in both the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images Sport

It is because of this that it seems they will not pursue any unnecessary distractions and will put their negotiations with Courtois and his representatives on hold until they learn their fate in the aforementioned competitions.

Real Madrid appear to still be intensely monitoring the ex-Atletico Madrid goalkeeper’s situation at Stamford Bridge but the Blues do appear to be set to secure a lucrative deal for Courtois.

It’s claimed that an offer worth in excess of £200,000 per week will be on the table for Courtois.

Bayern Munich star responds to reports linking him with a move to Chelsea

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski has played down rumours that he could leave the club this summer.

According to recent reports, Premier League duo Manchester United and Chelsea are closely monitoring Lewandowski’s situation at the Allianz Arena following claims that the striker is keen to seek pastures new at the end of the season.

However, the Poland international has been quick to laugh off these claims, telling Sky in Germany that he finds the speculation surrounding his future “funny”. He also denied that his recent decision to change agents was irrelevant when it comes to his future in the Bundesliga.

No, it has nothing to do with that. The speculation is funny, but it doesn’t interest me.

Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images Sport

Lewandowski has been in prolific form for Bayern over recent seasons and has firmly established himself as one of the world’s most impressive out and out strikers.

Chelsea are well-stocked with strikers now, with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud available to Antonio Conte. Michy Batshuayi is also set to return to Stamford Bridge in the summer once his loan deal at Borussia Dortmund expires.

However, they have been linked to some forwards of late, indicating that the Blues could look to add another striker to their squad ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Man United players given reward by Jose Mourinho following Chelsea win

Manchester United players have been rewarded for their efforts against Chelsea on Sunday with an extra day off by their manager.

Jose Mourinho’s men battled indefatigably for 94 minutes against the champions, recovering from Willian’s 32nd minute strike to claim an important 2-1 win to keep them in second place.

The 55-year-old has implemented a fixed day off policy which rules that players cannot be called to Carrington for a training session at the last minute on particular days – a right held by Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal – which has helped endear players to their manager.

And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Man United were scheduled to return to Carrington on Tuesday but Mourinho has decided to give them a day extra to enjoy themselves.

Romeu Lukaku, who deservedly claimed the ‘Man of the Match’ award on Sunday, has taken full advantage of the break by jetting off to New York to watch some NBA.

Victor Lindelof has travelled to Paris with his partner to celebrate perhaps his best performance in a United shirt so far.

And Jesse Lingard, the match-winner, has gone to Milan – a popular destination of his – for some relaxation.

Mourinho made a point of how crucial the work rate of his team was to overcoming Antonio Conte’s side, gesturing towards the players as he went down the tunnel, and his decision to give them an extra day off in response sends a message in itself.

The Portuguese, with the season approaching its crescendo, will no doubt expect nothing less than that level of dedication all over the pitch for the rest of the campaign.

Ethan Hamilton opens up about last minute call-up against Huddersfield

Ethan Hamilton has been reflecting on an “amazing” call-up to the first team on the morning of Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup.

The youngster received a place in the squad after Paul Pogba pulled out of the game with an illness, meaning Scott McTominay took his place in the starting XI.

Hamilton wasn’t introduced off the bench by Jose Mourinho, however, as the visitors claimed a routine 2-0 win at the Kirklees Stadium.

Nevertheless, Hamilton has told MUTV that the whole experience of travelling with the first team was special.

“It was amazing,” he said. “I got called up on the morning of the game. I was reporting to training anyway because we played Chelsea on the Friday night, so to then get the call was amazing and I was delighted. It came about that quickly.”

“I imagine if it had been the night before, I wouldn’t have been able to sleep but it came so quickly it was quite amazing the way it all happened. Having my name on the back of the shirt when I went into the changing room, I was a bit stunned – especially with it being next to all the amazing players.

“But you’ve got to believe you can get there and push on from there. All the first-team lads made me feel welcome, which was good. There were certain things to pick up on, like the way they prepared mentally before the game and around the changing room with the focus on the game.”

Some expressed surprise at the news of Hamilton, a relatively unknown name, taking a place in the squad instead of Tahith Chong, who has made a remarkable impact for the Under 23s since joining up with the squad in January.

But Hamilton, much like Scott McTominay last season, has been quietly yet assuredly knocking on the door of Mourinho’s first team for some time, featuring regularly under Ricky Spragia in the domestic league and making seven appearances in the UEFA Youth League.

He is best described as a no-nonsense, defensively oriented midfielder, capable of covering plenty of ground and giving opponents a formidable physical challenge.

But whether he has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, McTominay, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe remains to be seen.

From Italy: Man United outcast set for Serie A move in the summer

Calcio Mercato journalist Nicolo Schira has claimed that Matteo Darmian is set for a move back to Serie A in the summer having fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

The Italian enjoyed a strong end to the 2016/17 season but has since frustrated supporters with a series of turgid, technically deficient displays at full-back.

He has only made two Premier League starts this season and his only appearance this calendar year came against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup.

And Schira recently tweeted that Darmian, who had returned to Italy for a shopping day with his partner, was in pole position to join Juventus and had been greeted by supporters inviting him back to Serie A for next season.

“Milan Shopping day for Matteo #Darmian. In summer the farewell and return to Italy is looming #ManchesterUnited, with the #Juventus [in] pole [position].

“To the fans who today have come across him, inviting him in black [and white] and the defender responded with a smile.”

A move back to his homeland – a footballing culture which aligns much better with his style of player – seems like the only sensible decision for a player who has, along with the injured Daley Blind, dramatically fallen down the pecking order this season.

They have both gone from decent utility players to looking like painful relics from a failed Louis van Gaal era this season, incongruous and directionless, and you imagine they will be the first to depart Old Trafford as Mourinho looks to revitalise his options at full-back during the window.

Serie A boss interested in taking over from Antonio Conte at Chelsea

According to a report from the Telegraph, Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri would be interested in becoming Chelsea’s new boss if they are to replace Antonio Conte this summer.

Scrutiny has clouded Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge and it seems more likely than not that the Italian will depart West London at the end of the season.

A number of managers have been linked with a move to Chelsea but it seems Sarri, along with former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel, is open to a move to the club.

Enrico Locci/Getty Images Sport

It’s claimed by the Telegraph that Chelsea’s pursuit of ex-Barcelona manager Luis Enrique could fail as a result of the Spaniard’s financial demands. However, the report indicates that Sarri would be a cheaper option for the Blues.

Napoli are currently leading the way at the top of Serie A and have played fantastic football since Sarri’s arrival at the club.

Conte’s contract at Chelsea expires at the end of next season but if a manager of Sarri’s credentials does indeed become available, Roman Abramovich may well have a decision to make. Napoli do, however, want to keep hold of their manager given his exceptional work at the Stadio San Paolo.

Lukaku discusses how he came up with Lingard's goal vs Chelsea

Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku has discussed how he worked with Jesse Lingard to grab the club’s second goal vs Chelsea in the crucial clash.

The two Premier League giants went head to head on Sunday with Jose Mourinho’s men completing a comeback win that ended 2-1.

The Belgian stole the show with a performance worthy of a complete forward, scoring and assisting his teammate to practically singlehandedly win the game for United.

Lukaku’s record against the big clubs was well advertised but he proved on that day that he was not to be taken lightly with the Blues certainly regretting not signing him in the summer.

The striker assisted substitute Lingard for the second goal but acknowledged that it wasn’t a telepathic connection and instead the pair discussed how to take apart the London club.

According to Football London, Romelu said to MUTV: “I told him before the game that every time I go down the sides he needs to make sure he’s in the box because I will find him.

“And he did well on the run and it was a great finish. We realised between us that if we played a bit quicker between the lines we would create space for ourselves and that’s what we did, and I was happy with the goal.”

Alexis Sanchez initially started the match in the position that Jesse would eventually take over which is the attacking midfield role.

The Chilean actually had an opportunity to grab United’s and the game’s first goal but failed to convert and instead it was Chelsea who proved to be more clinical.

Sanchez didn’t necessarily have a poor game but it was clear to all that the Englishman would offer something different and he ultimately proved to be an inspired substitution.

Jesse Lingard has made a habit of scoring big goals on big occasions and continued his impressive record, staking a claim for first team action once more.

Having dipped in recent matches, the attacking midfielder was left out of the starting XI but he’s certainly given Mourinho something to think about.

On-loan Manchester United youngster explains the impact of Jose Mourinho putting his faith in Scott McTominay

Jose Mourinho’s management at Manchester United is “encouraging” for younger players involved with the club, left-back Demi Mitchell has claimed.

The 21-year-old made his debut for the club at the end of last season in the Reds’ final day Premier League victory against Crystal Palace.

He joined Scottish Premiership club Hearts in the January transfer window on a loan move until the end of this season and has been thoroughly impressive thus far.

The progress of Scott McTominay, who made his full debut alongside Mitchell last May, is giving encouragement to Mitchell while away on loan, knowing that opportunities to break into the first team are there under Mourinho.

“The manager gave me my debut and he has given Scott his as well, so he is giving youth a chance,” Mitchell explained.

“It is encouraging to see because I still have my sights set on playing one day for Manchester United.”

Mitchell is one a few loan stars impressing, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson at Shrewsbury Town earning plaudts weekly for his fantastic performances, including from England goalkeeper Joe Hart after West Ham United’s FA Cup tie against Henderson’s side.

He’ll hope to keep it up until the end of the season, and at least open up opportunities that were not previously there, even if he doesn’t have a first team future at United.

Mourinho was once criticised for his treatment of young players and inability to bring through academy graduates into the side. However, at United, he is dispelling that myth with McTominay.

“I am just worried at the moment about achieving as much as possible and doing well with Hearts,” Mitchell continued.

“We are still in the Scottish Cup and we need to finish in the top six, so there is lots to play for.

“Kilmarnock are only a few points behind us with games in hand so it is important we get a result.

“We have the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup against Motherwell on Sunday as well and we want to go far in that.”

Man Utd star sets eyes on high Premier League finish

Manchester United star Chris Smalling has insisted that second place in the Premier League should be the minimum target for the club.

Jose Mourinho’s men started the season strongly, going head to head with fierce rivals and league leaders Manchester City but then slowly started to fall away from the title race.

United’s decline wasn’t terrible and they’ve remained second for most of the current campaign with the Englishman having played a large number of those games.

According to Transfermarkt, Smalling has made 20 appearances in the Premier League of the 28 matches that have been played so far.

Having contributed to most of the Red Devils’ season, the centre-back believes that they should always aim for the highest but that second place is the bare minimum.

According to Eir Sport, Chris said: “I think obviously we’ve been second for quite a while and that needs to be our bare minimum. The fact we get to play Liverpool at home as well I think is a big advantage.

“If we can separate ourselves from Chelsea and Liverpool and work our way up then we can do that. But I think that’s our (goal) first and foremost.”

Most fans wouldn’t have expected the defender to make as many appearances for the club as he has done this season due to Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof’s presence.

However, the Ivorian has struggled with injuries while the Swede has proven that he needs a season to adjust to his new surroundings.

Jose Mourinho invested in both centre-backs in his two seasons at the club, proving that he believes the defence certainly needs some added quality.

This doesn’t spell well for Chris Smalling and Manchester United’s other defenders but they now have the opportunity to prove their worth before both the players form a solid partnership.

Supporters can only believe that Eric and Victor are the club’s future but the remaining defenders can definitely throw a wrench in those plans.

Why Chelsea may not appoint Luis Enrique this summer

Chelsea appear to be keen on making Luis Enrique their next manager but could face a stumbling block, with the Spaniard’s wage demands reportedly overly excessive.

It’s claimed by the Telegraph that the Blues are indeed exploring the possibility of replacing Antonio Conte with ex-Barcelona manager Enrique. However, they may face an uphill battle in negotiations, with Enrique claimed to have earned approximately £16.5 million-a-year during his tenure at Camp Nou.

Chelsea are not in the slightest bit troubled with regards to financial capabilities. However, Enrique’s most recent salary is significantly higher than what Conte reportedly earns at Chelsea.

David Ramos/Getty Images Sport

It’s stated by the Telegraph that the Italian boss earns £9.5m-a-year at Stamford Bridge currently.

Conte’s future in West London is becoming increasingly unlikely, with a number of potential suitors having been linked with the job at Stamford Bridge.

Enrique appears to head Roman Abramovich’s shortlist for his side’s next boss but he may need to stump up a huge pay packet if he is to convince the Spanish tactician to put pen to paper on a deal at the club.

Romelu Lukaku reveals reason for joining Manchester United ahead of returning to Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku has revealed why he signed for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho last summer from Everton instead of returning to his former-club Chelsea.

The Belgian was part of a stretched-out transfer saga in the summer window, with Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata also being considered by both Man United and Chelsea. The pair faced off, Lukaku in red and Morata in blue, on Sunday as Mourinho’s side beat the Premier League champions 2-1.

Lukaku notched a goal with a composed finish from close range before setting up Jesse Lingard to head home a winner with wonderful footwork and an accurate cross.

He was expected to join Chelsea, after a few years away from Stamford Bridge at Everton, and reuniting with Mourinho, the manager who sold him for the London club, was a surprise.

“When I make a choice, it’s with my head and my heart,” Lukaku revealed.

The 24-year-old claimed his choice has been vindicated.

“I made the right choice for me. I’m with a manager and players who push me every day,” Lukaku continued.

“I’m playing for the biggest club in the world, but not only that, I want to win trophies.”

Mourinho and United’s playing squad clearly had an influence on Lukaku’s decision. Already good friends with French midfielder Paul Pogba, Lukaku is enjoying life in Manchester and performing well.

He cannot yet be considered a world-class centre-forward, but a return of 23 goals already this season is good. His hold-up play has vastly improved in the last three months and at 24, he is far from the finished article.

Italian Football Federation make Antonio Conte number one target to be national team manager

The Italian Football Federation are searching for somebody to take over the reigns as their country’s national team manager and they have made Chelsea boss Antonio Conte their number one target.

Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge remains unclear, with plenty of pundits suggesting that he’ll leave in the summer and the IFF want him to take his old job.

The IFF are looking for a new boss after Gian Piero Ventura was sacked after Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time post the war and the their vice-commissioner Alessandro Costacurta told Gazzetta dello Sport that he plans to hold talks with Conte in the near future.

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images Sport

He said:

I haven’t chosen yet but I think Conte is the one who could do the best. I’ll definitely talk with him in a couple of months. He has already shown he knows how to be national team coach while the [other candidates] haven’t yet. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be happy with Roberto Mancini or with Carlo Ancelotti – although [Ancelotti] seems to have removed himself from consideration.

Conte was in charge of the Azzuri before heading to London in 2016, where he went on to with the Premier League title in his first season in charge.

Things have not gone so well for Chelsea this season and with talk of unrest between Conte and the powers-that-be at Stamford Bridge, he could well decide to move on in the summer.

Giggs hails this Man Utd star's performance vs Chelsea

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has hailed Scott McTominay for his performance during the club’s win over Chelsea in the Premier League.

The two English giants clashed on Sunday with Jose Mourinho’s men managing to complete a comeback win and secure a 2-1 result.

United conceded first through Willian’s effort but Romelu Lukaku struck back before the break to level the tie and it was Jesse Lingard who grabbed the winner in the second half.

McTominay started in the crucial fixture much to the surprise of many fans but his performance was undeniably perfect and he impressed many, even winning plaudits from pundits.

Giggs also praised the academy product, believing that Scott earned his start by performing well against Sevilla in the Champions League.

According to the Daily Star, Ryan said: “He didn’t put a foot wrong midweek, a difficult place to go, Sevilla, and today when he got the job, Hazard, you can see by the way he carries himself, he wouldn’t have got carried away.

“Just, ‘Right. This is my job. I’ve got to stick to it.’ And credit to him. You’ve seen Hazard go off after 70 minutes and job well done. He was one of the outstanding performances today.”

The young star is certainly putting pressure on the Red Devils’ other midfielders such as Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

The Spaniard has struggled to replicate last season’s ‘player of the year’ form and has slowly seen himself fall down the pecking order.

Fellaini’s unwillingness to extend his current contract beyond the summer appears to also effect his appearances for the club but he’ll definitely be looking over his shoulder now.

With Scott McTominay‘s rise in recent matches, both midfielders may feel that they are no longer undroppable or indispensable and Mourinho may now be willing to let go of the pair with confidence.

Manchester United’s veteran midfielder Michael Carrick has also backed the 21 year old to replace him when the time comes.

Reports: Manchester United Board 'Regrets' Signing Alexis Sanchez From Arsenal

Reports: Manchester United Board ‘Regrets’ Signing Alexis Sanchez From Arsenal

Reports in Chile suggest that Manchester United ‘regret’ signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal during the January window (via The Mirror).

With fans protesting the manager, weekly defeats and players who don’t show up for training, there isn’t much for Arsenal fans to be optimistic about these days.

However, many could enjoy some form of Schadenfreude from the reports coming out of Chile this morning regarding Alexis Sanchez.

The 29-year-old moved from Arsenal to Manchester United in the January transfer window in a deal which included Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way.

Now, El Pais claims that Manchester United regret signing the forward for a number of very important reasons.

A lot was made of the ridiculous wage structure being given to Alexis Sanchez and, it seems that those wages are having a negative effect on the dressing room.

Players like Paul Pogba are allegedly already looking for an increase in their weekly salaries to fall further in line with Sanchez’s.

The report also suggests that the United board regrets not simply waiting to sign the player for free in the summer once his Arsenal contract expired and losing Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the process.

It was a big decision to let Alexis Sanchez leave Arsenal for Manchester United in the January window but if these reports are anything to go by, it could prove well. As of now, the deal appears to more closely resemble Fernando Torres’ move from Liverpool to Chelsea than Robin Van Persie’s transfer from Arsenal to United.

Ian Wright Reveals Many Arsenal Players Fail To Turn Up For Training

Ian Wright Reveals Many Arsenal Players Fail To Turn Up For Training

Ian Wright has revealed some of the behind-the-scenes goings on at Arsenal and claimed that many players don’t take training seriously (via BBC).

Arsenal’s demise was no more evident than on Sunday afternoon as the Gunners put in a dull and lifeless display against the best side in the league, Manchester City.

The Carabao Cup final defeat has only amplified calls for Arsene Wenger to leave the club.

Now, an Arsenal legend is weighing in on the debate and given an insight into the goings on at the club.

“There’s no accountability for the players,” Ian Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live. “There’s no consequence for their poor performances.”

“You’re hearing of even young players coming into the squad and turning up late for training, people having to go to their houses. People not going to training or calling in sick.

“[For Wenger] it’s all about placating. You can’t do that with certain people because they take that kindness for weakness and that is what has happened to him.”

The most successful clubs harshly punish players for showing up late to training. That lack of respect for the work is one of the main reasons why the Gunners players aren’t performing right now. The blame for this must be equally split between the managers and the senior players in the squad who clearly aren’t taking their responsibilities seriously.

Here Are The Five Managers Arsenal Think Could Replace Arsene Wenger

Revealed: The Five Managers Arsenal Think Could Replace Arsene Wenger

Arsenal have reportedly got a five-person list of managers who could potentially replace Arsene Wenger (via The Mirror).

It has been a tough twelve months for Arsenal Football Club and if Sunday’s defeat to Manchester City is anything to go by, things won’t change anytime soon.

The lifeless display from the Gunners in the Carabao Cup final has again increased calls for a new manager at the Emirates.

Now, it has been revealed that Arsenal have a five-man list of manager which the club think could potentially replace Arsene Wenger.

The expected names like Joachim Loew and Leonardo Jardim are on there but there are also some surprise candidates.

Former club captain and current Manchester City coach, Mikel Arteta is reportedly in the running, as are Brendan Rodgers and Paulo Fonseca.

Fonseca is the current manager of Shakhtar Donetsk and attracting a host of admirers for his side’s style of play and success in Ukraine.

It’s clear that the time to replace Arsene Wenger has long since past and the Gunners have a promising list of candidates to do just that. The five are all on the younger side of the spectrum and with the exception of a couple – none of them have any real experience of managing a big side. Mikel Arteta is a hugely promising figure and would make a fine Arsenal manager one day but from that list, Loew and Jardim are the best candidates.

Chelsea line up shock move for Real Madrid superstar

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale has been linked with a surprise move to Chelsea this summer with the reiging European Champions set to have a clear out of their squad this summer, as reported by the Daily Star.

The Welshman has had a successful spell at the Spanish giants winning five major trophies, including three Champions Leagues.

The winger has really struggled with injuries this season which has meant he’s lost his first team place to Isco for a large part of the campaign and it looks like Madrid could cash in on him.

Denis Doyle/Getty Images Sport

At the time of signing for Madrid, Bale was the most expensive player in the world, but has really struggled to win over the club’s fans, often being left in the shadows of others.

Madrid, like Chelsea, have had a poor league season by their own high standards and they’re looking at revamoing their squad and as such, Bale is likey to leave.

Injuries asdie, the Welshman is a quality player and it’s no surprise to see Chelsea interested in him but they will need to splah the cash to get him as interest in sure to be high.

Numerous clubs eye up summer move for Chelsea star

Borussia Dortmund feel that they could be unlucky and miss out on a permanent deal for Michy Batshuayi because his incredible form has alerted a number of other clubs, as reported by the Evening Standard.

The Belgian international has been in brilliant form since moving to Germany on loan from Chelsea. He’s scored five goals in as many games, including two on his full debut against Cologne.

Batshuayi struggled to get any game time under Antonio Conte, with him largely featuring from the bench. That meant that he needed to move away in order to help his bid for a World Cup place this summer.

Emilio Andreoli/Getty Images Sport

It’s been revealed that the German club tried to include a clause in the loan that would allow them sign the player on a long-term deal but Chelsea were unwilling to do agree to such a stipulation.

Dortmund’s sporting director admitted that it might be tough for the club to sign him in the summer due to his brilliant form for the club.

The situation hasn’t changed since his signing, and certainly not to our advantage. He has become even more interesting to others.

Man United star earns place in BBC 'Team of the Week'

Romelu Lukaku has earned a place in Garth Crooks’ BBC ‘Team of the Week’ following a superb performance during Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

The Belgian endured a shaky start to the game but changed the mood around Old Trafford with a composed finish in a densely populated box to draw Man United level before half time.

He continued to harass Chelsea’s back three in the second half, producing a superb burst of pace and skill on the right hand side to bypass Antonio Rudiger and Pedro before crossing for Jesse Lingard to score the winner.

And the 24-year-old, now with 22 goals to his name this season, has been handed a place up front in Crooks’ ‘Team of the Week’, which amazingly contains four Liverpool players for beating David Moyes’ West Ham United at home.

Lukaku’s tentative opening 30 minutes and ruthless final hour nicely epitomised Man United’s overall performance against the champions, but neither his goal or assist reflected the nature of his display as much as his driving, ferocious, explosive run through the middle of Chelsea’s defence with 93 minutes on the clock.

On an afternoon that saw the hosts give everything, this was a moment that Old Trafford appreciated the most: their main striker, having charged around all game, still surging forward in search for more.

It was, above anything, a classic United performance mixed with a Mourinho masterclass – ruthless efficiency, undying spirit, a desire to spring forward quickly, and, most importantly, three points.

Nemanja Matic explains why he's excited by these two academy players

Nemanja Matic has insisted that Manchester United youngsters Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong have an exciting future ahead of them.

Gomes made his senior debut aged just 16 back in May and, having signed a new contract in December, received another cameo against Yeovil Town.

His performances have earned him a place in the Under 23 side along with Chong, who has impressed with a series of dynamic displays since moving up from the Under 18s in January.

And Matic, writing in his programme notes ahead of the Chelsea game, was quick to haul the pair as two exciting prospects.

“They are good players,” he said.

“They’re still very young but they show every time they train with us that Manchester United has a good future.

“I remember when I was young how important it was to train with the best player and I hope they will continue like this.”

The conveyor belt of fresh, audacious talent continues to churn out gems as it always has done at Man United, supervised and refined by the fastidiously down-to-earth Nicky Butt, with Gomes and Chong the most notable at this given time after ascending to Ricky Spragia’s side.

And they would have felt enormous encouragement – a sense of promise, of potential – by what they saw at Old Trafford on Sunday as Scott McTominay, less than ten starts to his name, patrolled the midfield with a sense of fervour and ubiquitousness that belied his years.

And then there was a Jesse Lingard, a good friend of Gomes and not too dissimilar to him in style and attitude, deciding the game with a bullet header.

Only at this club could academy players play a genuine role in deciding a big game. For all that his changed at Man United over the years, the vitality of youth, that inherent trust in what it can bring, remains alive and well.

Atalanta fans charged following incident with Chelsea star

UEFA have swiftly taken action on allegations made by Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi over racist chants from Atalanta fans during the Europa League clash between them and Borussia Dortmund.

Batshuayi is currently enjoying a positive spell in Germany on loan with Peter Stoger’s side but was left infuriated by sections of Atalanta fans, who are claimed to have made monkey noises towards him in the second leg of their round of 32 clash in the Europa League.

Emilio Andreoli/Getty Images Sport

As reported by Goal, it’s been confirmed that Atalanta have been formally charged following their fans’ conduct in the game, which Dortmund ultimately came out as victors in with a 4-3 scoreline on aggregate.

Batshuayi will hope that he can put this incident behind him as he aims to continue impressing with Dortmund until the end of the season.

Incredibly talented Man United target confirms he wants to play for Jose Mourinho

Franck Kessie has outlined his dream to play for Manchester United under Jose Mourinho in future.

The AC Milan midfielder has made a name for himself over the last three seasons with impressive performances in Serie A, initially for Atalanta and now at the San Siro.

He joined the I Rossoneri last summer on a two-year loan deal that includes an obligation to buy. That hasn’t stopped him from revealing his intention to sign for Man United one day, though.

“I’d like to play for United as they’ve always been my favourite team,” Kessie revealed in a significant development in his future.

The 21-year-old has drawn interest from most of the Premier League’s top clubs, with all of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City reportedly following and tracking his progress in Italy.

They may all be interested, but Kessie has a clear desire to play at Old Trafford. As a key player already for Milan, despite his recent arrival and young age, Kessie has been better than his teammates in general this season, with Gennaro Gattuso’s side struggling.

A marauding midfielder, Kessie is developing well in Italy and it is far from improbable to expect him to be in the thoughts of United and Jose Mourinho in future years.

The Reds are looking for a new midfielder, with Belgian Marouane Fellaini expected to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer, club captain Michael Carrick set to retire and Ander Herrera’s quality diminishing since last season.

Mourinho may look for a third quality midfielder to start alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic. United have been linked to Valencia’s Carlos Soler previously, and many others, and Kessie joins the list.

Barcelona join Manchester United and Chelsea in race for Belgium international

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld in recent weeks but are set to face a whole host of competition for the Belgian’s signature.

According to a report from the Independent, La Liga giants Barcelona are also keeping tabs on the defender’s situation with Spurs, with his contract talks appearing to have reached an impasse with the club.

Alderweireld has proven over the years that he is a hugely capable defender and has established himself as a crucial player for Spurs. However, it’s been claimed that Mauricio Pochettino’s club are unwilling to meet the former Atletico Madrid man’s wage demands.

Michael Steele/Getty Images Sport

Although Daniel Levy is reluctant to sell Alderweireld, and even more so to a Premier League rival, he could be forced into a decision. The player is claimed to have a release clause of £25m ahead of the 2019 summer transfer window, which may prompt the Spurs chairman into cutting his losses.

Alderweireld is sure to be courted by a number of clubs this summer if Spurs continue to refuse his financial demands. Manchester United are also being cited with interest in the ex-Southampton loanee.

Pundit explains why this Man United star is a problem for Jose Mourinho

Jesse Lingard is presenting Jose Mourinho with his biggest problem at Manchester United according to Jermaine Jenas.

The Englishman has been in fantastic form in the last three months, the best spell of his Man United career seeing him become an important player in the side and one of the most consistent, too.

However, Mourinho brought in Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January in a straight player-swap deal for Armenian attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was getting little playing time, with Arsenal.

Since then, Lingard’s role in the side has diminished.

Jesse Lingard is probably giving Mourinho his biggest problem at the moment – in the best possible way,” Jenas said.

The 26-year-old netted the winner for United against Premier League champions Chelsea on Sunday afternoon in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford, heading home well after a fantastic delivery from striker Romelu Lukaku, who scored the equaliser.

“He brings so much to the United attack when he plays, either on the right or more centrally behind the centre-forward, but since Alexis Sanchez signed for United, he has started only three out of their seven games,” Jenas continued.

“I can understand why, because Mourinho has got a lot of attacking options – but with Lingard playing the way he is, surely he cannot ignore what he has got to offer.”

As things stand, Lingard offers far more to United than Alexis Sanchez does. That would have sounded ridiculous only four months ago, but Lingard has firmly cemented himself as one of the best players, in terms of form, in the side.

His impact off the bench on Sunday was a reminder of his new-found goalscoring prowess, striking his eighth league goal of the season and his 13th in all competitions this campaign.

It’s his best season in terms of goals ever, and he has won United points in a multitude of games now. It won’t be long before Lingard returns to the starting line-up, surely, the question is whether it is Sanchez who he replaces.

Being a young player in Jose Mourinho’s side is “extra special,” claims Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay has admitted his delight at receiving praise from Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho after a string of impressive performances in the Reds’ first team.

The 21-year-old has been given a number of displays of Mourinho’s faith in him in recent weeks, starting ahead of Paul Pogba in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg away in Seville and then starting alongside the Frenchman and Nemanja Matic in a midfield three against Premier League champions Chelsea in Sunday’s 2-1 victory.

McTominay impressed against Sevilla and at Old Trafford at the weekend. Despite an error and lapse of concentration in the build-up to Willian’s opener for Chelsea, McTominay made up for it with a solid, confident and composed display against the Blues.

“It’s great when any manager talks about you, but when it’s Jose Mourinho it’s extra special,” McTominay said of the praise he was handed by Mourinho post-match.

“I just have to remain humble, and keep working hard for the team.”

It’s the right attitude from McTominay and Mourinho is not usually one to heap excessive praise on youngsters. The Portuguese must have judged McTominay’s character as to be suited to being given praise.

He seems well-grounded and sensible and that comes across both in the press and on the pitch. Mourinho will continue giving McTominay chances, particularly with injuries to Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

David de Gea to demand that he becomes highest paid goalkeeper in the world with new Man United deal - report

David de Gea will demand that he becomes the highest paid goalkeeper in world football in contract negotiations with Manchester United.

The Sun suggest that De Gea has learned of the huge wages being given to the team’s main outfield players Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba and wants a new deal to match those two key figures.

Given the Spaniard is the club’s best and arguably most important player, it seems unlikely those high up at Old Trafford will be resistant to offering De Gea such wages to ensure his future is at in Red.

Perennially linked to Spanish giants Real Madrid, De Gea came remarkably close to joining the European champions in 2015 when a £35m deal was agreed between the two sides, but an administration error with a fax machine prevented the transfer from going through.

Weeks later, he penned a new four-year contract at Man United. That deal still has 18 months remaining on it, and United also have the option to trigger a contract extension clause which would keep De Gea for a further year.

Thus, there is no rush, but given that significant interest remains from Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez, United’s Executive Vice-Chairman will be keen to get De Gea tied down imminently by improving his £200,000-a-week contract.

Chelsea and Manchester United to fight for Bayern Munich striker

Chelsea will reportedly aim to land Robert Lewandowski if the player can convince Bayern Munich to sell him in the summer.

According to a report from Sky Sports, the Poland international is pondering his future in Germany and could be on the lookout for a move away when the season comes to an end.

Lewandowski remains a key player for Bayern. He has established himself as the club’s talisman since his controversial move from Borussia Dortmund and is widely considered as one of the most complete forwards in world football.

Chelsea have struggled to find the net regularly this season and have encountered issues with their striking options. Alvaro Morata has severely dropped off following his early season form, which led Chelsea to sign Olivier Giroud from Arsenal in January.

Lewandowski is held in high esteem in world football, though, and is deemed a world class talent. There is sure to be a colossal battle for his signature if he does indeed opt to force a move away from the Allianz Area.

Manchester United are also cited with interest in the powerful forward.

Jose Mourinho hails “modern midfield player” Scott McTominay, but is waiting for youngster to add this to his game

Jose Mourinho has once again singled out young Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay for praise.

The 21-year-old was given a demonstration of Mourinho’s faith in him as he started against Premier League champions on in a midfield three alongside Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.

Despite a mistake in the build-up to Willian’s opener for the visitors, McTominay impressed at Old Trafford with a confident performance in his 17th appearance for the club.

Mourinho hailed McTominay after the game on Sunday afternoon following a fantastic 2-1 win for the Reds.

“He is a fantastic player, a player that is a modern midfield player, he can do everything,” Mourinho said.

The Portuguese coach is eagerly anticipating McTominay adding more to his game in the form of goals.

“The only thing he’s not doing yet is scoring goals, which he can, the only reason he isn’t is because of the job I am giving him,” the 55-year-old said. “I think in the future he can, we saw that in pre-season, but I am very happy with him today.”

Even after praising McTominay, Mourinho was quick to take the attention away from one player in particular, reserving some of his good words for two of his recent signings, Nemanja Matic, who arrived from Chelsea last summer, and Alexis Sanchez, who joined from Arsenal in January.

“I don’t like to individualise,” Mourinho continued. “Nemanja Matic also played very well in midfield, and the defenders too, and Alexis Sanchez made a huge effort too. In the second half we were more confident, I think if anyone deserved the win, it was us.”
