David de Gea will demand that he becomes the highest paid goalkeeper in world football in contract negotiations with Manchester United.
The Sun suggest that De Gea has learned of the huge wages being given to the team’s main outfield players Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba and wants a new deal to match those two key figures.
Given the Spaniard is the club’s best and arguably most important player, it seems unlikely those high up at Old Trafford will be resistant to offering De Gea such wages to ensure his future is at in Red.
Perennially linked to Spanish giants Real Madrid, De Gea came remarkably close to joining the European champions in 2015 when a £35m deal was agreed between the two sides, but an administration error with a fax machine prevented the transfer from going through.
Weeks later, he penned a new four-year contract at Man United. That deal still has 18 months remaining on it, and United also have the option to trigger a contract extension clause which would keep De Gea for a further year.
Thus, there is no rush, but given that significant interest remains from Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez, United’s Executive Vice-Chairman will be keen to get De Gea tied down imminently by improving his £200,000-a-week contract.
