Arsene Wenger has today responded to Gary Neville’s criticism of the Arsenal players’ performance in the Carabao Cup final (via Arsenal.com).
It was simple to pick a few faults in Arsenal’s performance in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
The Gunners were toothless in attack and embarrassing defensively which is why their performance attracted so much justified criticism.
Gary Neville was one of the most vocal on that front during his co-commentary of the match for Sky Sports.
“Ramsey. Xhaka. Ozil. You’re walking on a football pitch at Wembley. Why are you walking? You’re a disgrace. An absolute disgrace,” Neville said on-air.
Now, Arsene Wenger has responded to this harsh – and undoubtedly justified – criticism from the former Manchester United captain.
You find in every single game, on both sides, moments where a player doesn’t track,” Wenger said in his pre-match press conference.
“Why has he made two runs before to go in behind and was exhausted, or did he not track because he didn’t want to? That is different.
“I believe we have to live with that criticism and respond together like we always do. We got to the final and you don’t get there by coincidence, you have to fight to get there and we did.
“We didn’t play against a poor team in the semi-final, we played against Chelsea and we have shown that we can fight. You have to acknowledge as well that Man City are a quality team.”
It’s difficult to side with a former Manchester United captain over the club’s own manager but Gary Neville’s criticism of the Arsenal team was entirely justified. The Gunners were pathetic in the second-half 0f Sunday’s final and were lucky the score was kept to 3-0.
