Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has encouraged Henrikh Mkhitaryan to join Arsenal in order to reinvigorate his career.
The Armenian has been surplus to requirements under Jose Mourinho since November following a stream of poor displays at No.10.
Mkhitaryan’s agent Mino Raiola has confirmed that talks with Arsenal over a potential swap deal involving Alexis Sanchez are underway but made it clear that no decision had been taken yet.
And Yorke, speaking earlier this week, insisted that the 28-year-old was an “Arsenal type of player”.
“Don’t forget, Mkhitaryan was in really exceptional form earlier on this season,” he said. “For some reason in the last few months he’s fallen out of favour. Maybe it’s a lack of form or a lack of confidence he showed earlier on this season.”
“But [he’s] an Arsenal type of player. He’s got quality and we’ve seen that at Old Trafford but he’s sort of lost his way here.
“A new start in London, playing for Arsenal, it might be the key factor in him going.”
Mkhitaryan has spoken effusively of Arsenal in the past and his nimble, passing-orientated approach going forward falls in line with the kind of player Arsene Wenger likes to use. He comfortably fits into a similar bracket with the likes of Tomáš Rosický, Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla.
He would be required to do less tracking back and allowed more freedom in possession, his purpose revolving around picking up the ball in behind midfielders and contributing to that notoriously fluid, all-encompassing passing game in the final third that works wonders at home to AFC Bournemouth or Huddersfield Town.
The Armenian is unlikely to encounter much success at a club dwindling under Wenger, but he will certainly feel more at home.
