Manchester United have started talks with goalkeeper David de Gea to secure the Spaniard’s long-term future at the club.
De Gea’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the next season, though Man United could trigger an extension of one additional year.
Manager Jose Mourinho recently confirmed that the club would be seeking to tie De Gea down to a new deal, and that the contract extension option would be triggered while talks progressed to safeguard United.
The Telegraph report that talks between club and player are at a very early start, after contact was made regarding a new deal two weeks ago. Real Madrid have been and are perennially linked with the Spaniard, who has previously been attracted by the chance to play for Los Blancos in his home city and return to his family while competing for major European trophies.
However, it is now thought he’s happy at United and enjoying life in the city. The European champions came very close to completing a deal for De Gea in 2015 while Louis van Gaal was United boss, as a £29m fell through at the very last moment on transfer deadline day.
Following that debacle and questions over how desperate Real were to actually sign their man, De Gea penned a new four-year deal at United (with the option for a further year).
Zinedine Zidane’s Real have maintained their interest and were prepared to make movements last summer before they set their focus on Kylian Mbappe, who eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain as the second most expensive player of all time.
