Gianluca di Marzio has claimed that Manchester United are now leading the race to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal after the club made considerable progress with the player’s agents this week.
Sanchez came close to joining Manchester City over the summer and appeared to be destined for a move to the Ethiad this month after agreeing personal terms with Pep Guardiola.
But it was revealed on Thursday that Man United had swooped in with a bigger offer for the Chilean, tabling a bid around £25 and offering Sanchez £250,000 a week.
And according to Di Marzio, United’s improved offer has placed them in the driving seat to sign the 29-year-old this month.
Gianluca di Marzio says that Manchester United now lead Manchester City in the race for PSG target Alexis Sanchez, with the player's agents having made progress with the Red Devils.

Sources in Chile have corroborated the claim that United offered a package Man City are willing to match. Arsenal have demanded around £30m for his services but the Premier League leaders aren’t prepared to strike a compromise with Arsene Wenger.
Sources in Chile indicate Manchester United’s offer for Alexis Sanchez is legitimate and far superior to City’s offer. City have decided not to increase their initial offer of £20m. #mufc [cooperativa]

This gives Mourinho a superb chance to bolster his attacking options in January – adding that ‘magician’ forward he has asked for – and possibly securing a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who hasn’t been able to impose himself since his return from surgery.
That said, Wenger has emphasised that no deal will go through with any club before he secures a replacement, with Bordeaux forward Malcom the most likely option.
