Real Madrid will launch a huge offensive on Premier League talent this summer, and Manchester United’s David de Gea is unsurprisingly included in that.
Zinedine Zidane’s side are sitting a terrible 19 points behind title rivals FC Barcelona, and club president Florentine Perez is planning a massive summer, one of the biggest of any club in transfer history.
Sportsmail report that Los Blancos will make £200m moves for both Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Tottenham Hotspur’s world-class striker Harry Kane. Simultaneously, David de Gea is a £100m target.
Madrid were expected to focus on other goalkeeping targets, more specifically Athletic Bilbao’s 23-year-old shotstopper Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, the Basque club have tied him down to a new contract with a £70m release clause.
De Gea came close to moving back to his home city of Madrid in 2015, having joined Man United from Atletico Madrid back in 2011 for a then-record fee of just over £18m. The European champions have been perennially linked to the Spaniard ever since.
However, Perez will focus on other goalkeeping targets if United demand more than £100m for their world-class and irreplaceable player. Behind De Gea, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, also a former-Atleti man.
The task for United, then, seems simple: reject any offers from Real Madrid for De Gea, and they won’t continue their pursuit of him once they find a suitable alternative. De Gea is worth far more than £100m to United simply because he cannot be replaced, not even for £100m.
Goalkeepers are vastly underpriced, and De Gea is more important to United than one part of an expensive attack like Romelu Lukaku or Alexis Sanchez. Unless De Gea pushes hard for a summer exit, there is no chance he should be allowed to leave.
