Jose Mourinho has spoken of his delight that he could give Angel Gomes another first-team opportunity.
The 17-year-old was brought on for striker Marcus Rashford in Manchester United’s 4-0 FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Yeovil Town on Friday night.
It’s his second appearance for the Reds, both coming under Jose Mourinho in the last 12 months. He secures his debut by replacing Wayne Rooney at the end of last season’s Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace.
After coming in against Yeovil, he skinned a player before coming close to an immediate goal as he struck a shot into the side-netting.
“Greedy Gomes!” Mourinho joked. “He wanted to score the goal! But it’s normal.
“It’s nice and good for him. So, so young. Last year, he had his debut and he’s been training with us now and again.”
Mourinho revealed that Gomes simply being involved with first-team training and matches has helped his confidence, and thus quality, hugely.
“He had this feeling of being in the first team and immediately had confidence and quality,” Mourinho said. “I’m happy for the kid.”
It’s brilliant to see Mourinho continuing to give Gomes chances. It’s unlikely there’ll be many more this season, but had his only involvement been that debut in May 2017, it would have been a meaningless action. By involving him in training regularly and giving him a very brief chance in the Cup, he’s slowly being introduced to the first team.
