Jose Mourinho explains touchline incident with Chelsea coach

Jose Mourinho has opened up about the incident at the end of Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

After the hosts equalised in the 96th-minute, one of the Chelsea coaching staff, Marco Ianni, was seen celebrating massively in front of Man United boss Mourinho.

Ianni was pumping his fists just in front of Mourinho and the Portuguese manager reacted furiously, running over to Ianni and having to be restrained by stewards.

It was a small moment in a superb afternoon of football in West London. Chelsea took the lead through Antonio Rudiger in the first half before a double from Anthony Martial got United in front. Ross Barkley’s late equaliser made it a fair result, but a gutting one for United.

“What happened was with [Maurizio] Sarri’s assistant and Sarri [Chelsea manager] was the first one who came to me and said he would resolve the problem internally with him,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“And after that Sarri’s assistant came to me and apologised to me.

“Of course I accept apologies and forget it, because I also made lots of mistakes in my career. It’s over.”

It’s the right response from Mourinho and it’s good to see him noting that he’s done similar things in his career. It was a celebration from the Chelsea coach in the heat of the moment and can be forgotten straight away.

The incident shouldn’t cloud over what was a great game and a very pleasing performance from United. Mourinho’s side attacked properly in the second half and reaped their rewards. They couldn’t hold onto a famous win, having failed to come away from Stamford Bridge with three points since October 2012.
