Paul Ince has described Manchester United signing Alexis Sanchez as ‘priceless’.
The 29-year-old signed a four-and-a-half year deal with the Reds on Monday, joining from Arsenal as Henrikh Mkhitaryan went the other way in a straight player-swap deal.
Sanchez had been expected to join Manchester City either this month or in the summer when his contract at the Emirates was set to expire.
Ince suggested that United’s signing of Sanchez shows that they remain a far bigger club than City.
“When it comes to the two clubs, United are miles bigger than City,” Ince said.
“Players would still prefer to go to them over Pep’s side, fact. Players won’t go to City because they think they’re a bigger, more historic club than United. They’re simply not.
“This signing only confirms that. Sanchez had the opportunity to go into a team where he could have won a trophy. But he didn’t, he chose to go to United because of everything they stand for and that says a lot about the size of the club.”
The signing of Sanchez instantly makes United contenders for the UEFA Champions League, Ince believes. The Reds haven’t won the trophy since 2008.
“He’s a special player and the sort that doesn’t come around that often, and I’d say United’s hopes of winning their fourth European trophy have just got a lot more likely.
“This is United’s way of saying: ‘Don’t belittle us. We’re still the biggest club & we can get who we want.’ It seems United, City, Liverpool and Chelsea were all after him. Sanchez choosing United sends a big message to those clubs, especially City.”
The former-United plater ridiculed talk of the fees involved in the Sanchez deal. Jose Mourinho has signed a world-class player without a transfer fee, and a player that Ince hailed as ‘priceless’.
“Sanchez is a game changer. He’s priceless. All the talk of his transfer fee has been a joke,” the 50-year-old said. “That’s what you expect now when you want to buy the best players, it’s just the way the market is. In that current United side, there’s no one like him.”
