Ryan Giggs has backed Jose Mourinho to start Ander Herrera in Sunday’s Manchester derby.
Manchester United are without Paul Pogba after the Frenchman picked up a three-game suspension for a late challenge in Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin in last weekend’s 3-1 away victory against the Gunners.
And Herrera is the man who will replace him, believes Giggs.
“I think it’ll be Herrera,” Giggs said on Sky Sports’ The Debate show.
“I’ve said about the game against Chelsea last year and if he’s up against Silva, I can definitely see that.”
Herrera was responsible for closely man-marking Eden Hazard against Chelsea and reduced the Belgian’s influence. But if he does so with Silva, Kevin de Bruyne will be free to flourish in the derby without Herrera’s attentions.
“But I don’t know,” Giggs continued.
“If they do sit back like they did against Arsenal and play like an away team, then the crowd could be subdued.
“So does he [Mourinho] go onto the front foot?
“Does he try force a mistake?
“Because the weakest part of City’s team is probably the defence.”
Herrera would certainly be a more attacking decision than the inclusion of Marouane Fellaini from Mourinho, but could harm the defensive solidity of the side. The Spaniard, though a fan favourite and though his performance against CSKA Moscow in midweek was arguably his best of the season, has a tendency to be drawn out of his position and leave large gaps in midfield.
City will punish that kind of mistake from Herrera with ruthless efficiency. Fellaini, though less creative and sometimes a liability, is less likely to do so.
Both are a downgrade of a huge quantity on Pogba, who will be a great miss to United on Sunday afternoon.
