Manchester United invite brilliant 17-year-old international talent for January trial

Manchester United have invited Canadian talent Alphonso Davies for a trial at the club’s Carrington Aon Training Complex.

Davies is one of the finest talents in Major League Soccer, playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

He’s been linked to top European clubs for some time, having made a name for himself quickly. He made his debut for the Whitecaps as a 15-year-old and is the youngest player in history to score in the CONCACAF Champions League as well as both the Canadian Championship and United Soccer League.

Davies, at 17 years old, is one of the Whitecaps most important players. He scored thrice in six appearances for Canada in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

His trial will depend on the Whitecaps permitting Davies to leave for a period to Manchester. And that’s before a transfer fee and discussions over that are started.  There is little doubt that the Whitecaps, with a player of Davies’ talent in their hands, would attempt to get as much for their starlet as possible, particularly with Man United’s financial power no secret.

CTV Edmonton’s Adam Cook tweeted the news on Friday, and Davies will come to England after the New Year.

United have acted before any other big club, though many have watched Davies. He’ll meet up with his potential new teammates in January. United’s under-18s drew 2-2 against Liverpool on Saturday morning at the Cliff Training Ground with a 93rd-minute equaliser from summer signing Arnau Puigmal, who arrived from Espanyol.

Davies’ Canada debut came days after he was granted Canadian citizenship, having emigrated to North America aged 5 after his parents fled the Liberian civil war and lived temporarily in a refugee camp in Ghana.
