Antonio Conte has had his say on Chelsea’s summer transfer window and how he was disappointed at how the club failed to bring in a number of his targets and perhaps we now know why.
According to the London Evening Standard, two of Chelsea’s transfer targets turned down the chance to join the Premier League champions because they feared that Conte would be gone by next season.
In Conte’s 18-month tenure as Chelsea boss, there have been times where the media have claimed that his position was under threat, but the Italian, who has a strong affinity with the fans following his magical first season at the club, remains at the helm for now.
The Blues sit 14 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City and there has been continued talk of a return to Italian football in the near future and those rumours intensified when Conte signed a new deal with the Blues that only improved his terms and did not extend the length of the contract beyond it’s existing 2019 expiry.
Potential vacancies at Real Madrid and PSG have been put forward as potential landing spots for Conte also should he leave Chelsea in the near future.
As for the two players that snubbed the Blues in the summer, they remain undisclosed but one can speculate that Ross Barkley could perhaps be one of the two names given his sudden change of heart on transfer deadline day regarding a switch from Everton.
