Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson has given his account of why Romelu Lukaku didn’t celebrate his winning goal vs Bournemouth.
Manchester United managed to overcome a stubborn Cherries side thanks to the Belgian’s effort but he was noticeably reluctant to celebrate wholeheartedly.
Often criticised for his goals not having a true effect on a scoreline, Lukaku would’ve been right to celebrate wildly since he singlehandedly got United all three crucial points.
The striker has also been under heavy fire from pundits and fans alike for his lack of end product in recent matches.
Having started the season so well, Romelu has since dipped in form and Thompson believes he has an idea on why the former Everton man didn’t celebrate vs Bournemouth.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Phil said: “The way Jose’s criticised a lot of his players, we’re not privy obviously to what goes on behind closed doors, but has he maybe questioned him in the dressing room and said ‘Ibra’s getting nearly ready’?
“He’s not been shy has he Jose in picking out players and having a go at them and making it public. But was that maybe a reason behind [the lack of a celebration] and he’s thinking ‘you’ve been a little bit harsh on me’.”
Of course there are other reasons why Romelu Lukaku didn’t celebrate heavily after scoring the game’s only goal.
The Belgian is his own biggest critic and he’s more unhappy with himself than any fan or pundit can be which is perhaps why he didn’t feel the need to celebrate.
He knows he must do better and despite scoring, felt that he can still perform better and won’t be happy until he’s back on the scoring charts regularly again.
It must also be said that while he didn’t celebrate convincingly, it was also clear that there was some element of relief in his body language and he just decided to keep his celebrations to himself.
Not every goal scored has to be made a big deal out of it and so don’t put it past Lukaku not celebrating in the future until he feels he’s performing well consistently.
