Manchester United have reportedly changed their stance on sought-after Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt who they were heavily linked with signing.
The Dutchman was always a potential wonder-kid but his performances for his club in the Champions League saw interest grow in him tenfold.
After all, the Eredivisie side were fantastic in their run to an unexpected semi-final berth, eventually falling to Tottenham.
De Ligt was subsequently linked with a move to Barcelona before United themselves emerged as surprise candidates for his signature.
It was initially believed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was looking for more experienced centre-backs to sign and perhaps that was true all along.
According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils’ hierarchy feel Matthijs is set to join Barcelona and so have stopped chasing his signature, putting an end to the transfer rumours.
It makes sense for Solskjaer to turn his attentions to more realistic targets should that be the case but there’s no doubt whoever he signs will be a less talented alternative.
Wherever De Ligt ends up, he pretty much guarantees that club at least a decade’s worth of top defending with the centre-back position all but secured.
Manchester United have also been said to be keen on the likes of Harry Maguire and Kalidou Koulibaly who are both still better alternatives to their current defensive options.
