Pundit explains why this Man United player is struggling under Jose Mourinho

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has discussed star striker Romelu Lukaku’s troubles in front of goal.

The Belgian forward had a blistering start to his career at Old Trafford but has since seen his form dip as the season progresses.

Manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Lukaku is undroppable, even if he’s not scoring as his link up play and work rate make up for it.

However, after the former Everton man’s struggles in front of goal against fierce rivals Manchester City, Mourinho may be forced to reconsider.

Neville though thinks that Romelu’s issues are psychological and that he’s bereft of confidence and belief in himself as a United striker.

According to Sky Sports, Gary said: “You look at him today and he struggled. I’m not just talking about struggling in terms of missing a chance, he struggled at being in the game and being confident in the game.

“He’s got to get over that quickly as he’s Manchester United’s centre-forward. He’s a young lad but he needs to get to the point where he believes he should be out there – it’s like he doesn’t believe it in this period.”

Romelu Lukaku’s lack of influence in key games this season is what he’s been heavily criticised for by pundits and fans alike.

Jose clearly admires the player’s mobility and sacrifice for the team but the striker was brought in to the club to help the team become more clinical.

United’s lack of efficiency and poor conversion rate was hugely publicised and it was thought that the Portuguese manager shelled big on one of his former players to address this issue.

The start of the season saw the team reap the benefits of Lukaku’s natural goalscoring instinct but his performances of late have been alarming and must be addressed.

Mourinho’s insistence on playing the striker no matter the circumstances is damaging his player’s confidence and the team’s chances.

Romelu is in clear need of a rest and some time away from the spotlight which will surely only benefit him in the long run.
