David de Gea 8 – A stupendous display. Absolutely ridiculous. Made two seemingly impossible saves, first from Lukaku’s deflection and then a point-blanc effort from Alexis Sanchez, alongside an array of smart stops and important interventions. There aren’t many goalkeepers who entertain, but the Spaniard is one of them.
Antonio Valencia 7 – Produced a pin-point finish to get Manchester United going early on and tracked onrushing Arsenal forwards with discipline. Never stopped running.
Victor Lindelof 7 – The Swede displayed his technical prowess at Vicarage Road, but the trip to the Emirates revealed his fighting spirit. Positioned himself well on the whole.
Chris Smalling 6.5 – Occasionally lacked the balance needed at the base of a back three but his physical presence was invaluable.
Marcos Rojo 6 – Battled extremely hard, stretching every sinew to stop Arsenal getting in behind, but looked frenetic at times. Picked up a booking in the second half.
Ashley Young 7 – He may not have the armband, but make no mistake: the Englishman is an exemplary leader. Disciplined himself brilliantly and handed the ball well.
Nemanja Matic 7.5 – How glad Jose Mourinho will be that the Serbian was fit for this game. Wherever Arsenal went, he was there: blocking shots, needling the ball through the lines, putting players on the floor. Superb.
Paul Pogba 7 – Simply superb, until a moment of madness towards the end: acted as a superb conduit between defence and attack, his touch phenomenal, and provided two perfectly calculated assists. Let himself down massively with a challenge on Hector Bellerin that deserved a red and, crucially, rules him out for the derby.
Jesse Lingard 8 – A truly mesmerising performance at No.10. Won the ball off midfielders and played a central role in counter attacking moves, adding two crisp finishes to once again confound his critics.
Anthony Martial 7 – His sheer brilliance shone through in the lead-up to Man United’s opening two goals, most notably with his assist for Lingard. Continued to impress on the ball as the game went on, stretching Arsenal’s defence whenever he could.
Romeu Lukaku 7.5 – He may not have found the net, but that didn’t matter. This was undoubtedly one of his best all-round displays in a United shirt, linking up smartly with teammates, holding up the ball well, and posing a constant physical threat.
