Paul Scholes has blamed Jose Mourinho for Manchester United’s transfer failures, not a lack of money.
The Portuguese spoke in midweek about Man United being able to spend less than local title rivals Manchester City as well as the fact that the Reds are often charged more due to their status in world football.
Scholes insisted Mourinho was wrong. The gap between United and Pep Guardiola’s Man City was bigger at Christmas than the gap between 1st and 2nd in English top-flight football ever.
The BT Sport pundit suggested Mourinho’s comments were odd.
“It’s a little bit strange,” Scholes claimed, explaining that “whatever money he wants is available here.”
Mourinho has spent in excess of £300m since arriving at United, only a small amount less than Guardiola across the city.
Scholes says his signings have been a waste of money sometimes.
“The problem he’s had is spending it wisely,” he continued.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has struggled to find consistency, only occasionally showing his worth after arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2016.
Paul Pogba has been superb, captaining United regularly in the absence of Antonio Valencia now, while Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic have both been very good signings.
The value of Victor Lindelof and Mkhitaryan has been questioned, although they have both been important at times.
Perhaps it’s only in comparison to City, all of whose signings have been almost faultless, where Mourinho’s spending looks wasteful.
An argument often made, though, is that Mourinho inherited a worse squad at United than Guardiola at City.
