Juan Mata has insisted Manchester United must learn to move on from defeats if they are to be successful this season.
The Spaniard was making a point after the Reds suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Championship side Bristol City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Man United should have comfortably beaten their lower league opposition away from home on Wednesday night, but a Korey Smith winner in the 93rd-minute condemned Jose Mourinho’s men to humiliation.
Mata believes the players have no choice but to move on from a ‘massive blow’.
“When you play for a club like Manchester United every defeat is a massive blow for everyone,” Mata said.
“For the fans, for you but especially for us. We suffer when we don’t win because there’s such a high standard in this football club to try and win every game.
“But we need to understand that defeat is part of sport and part of football and it can happen so it’s not a tragedy.
“It’s not good at all, but we need to move on and accept it as a part of football and keep moving.
“Obviously, we would like to win every single game and we would like to try to do so until the end of the season.”
Moving back to focus on the Premier League, United will need to win every single game as Mata says to challenge Manchester City for the title.
Now without the chance of a trophy in the shape of the Carabao Cup, which Mourinho lifted as his first trophy with the club last season, United’s chances of silverware are looking slimmer.
City are 11 points ahead in the Premier League already, and United aren’t good enough to win the UEFA Champions League. The Reds will hope for a successful FA Cup campaign.
