Manchester United star could be set for sensational return to Bundesliga side after spat with Mourinho

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be set for a shock return to Borussia Dortmund after falling out with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese revealed he will accept offers for players who wish to leave the club if they meet Man United’s valuation in January, as he did with Morgan Schneiderlin (to Everton) and Memphis Depay (to Olympique Lyonnais) earlier this year.

Mkhitaryan and Mourinho are reported to have had a spat after the latter criticised the Armenian for his performance as a second-half substitute in United’s 1-0 Premier League win against Brighton & Hove Albion. He hasn’t played for the club since.

Having arrived from Dortmund for less than £30m in 2016, Mkhitaryan could return less than two years later with the Bundesliga side interested in re-signing him.

The Independent suggest that Mkhitaryan could follow in the footsteps of Shinji Kagawa, the Japanese international who joined United in June 2012 before returning to Dortmund two years later.

Both attacking midfielders won Bundesliga Player of the Season before signing for United, but both failed to live up to their potential.

Inter Milan and Besiktas have also both been linked to a move for Mkhitaryan in January or in the summer.

The Independent also briefly suggest that United may look to include Dortmund’s talented young midfielder Julian Weigl as part of a deal for Mkhitaryan’s return. If so, it could prove to be one of the biggest stories of the January transfer window, though incredibly unlikely that United could pull it off.

28-year-old Mkhitaryan is clearly a fantastic player. United fans have had glimpses of that. But he is too inconsistent and despite a string of assists at the start of the season, his performances overall have been pretty poor.
