Jose Mourinho refused to answer whether he thought Paul Pogba’s red card was justified following Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday.
The Frenchman, who was instrumental for the visitors all game, lunged to win the ball and, while he did make contact, his boot went straight over on Hector Bellerin’s ankle.
Andre Marriner duly gave Pogba his marching orders with 15 minutes left, ruling him out of next weekend’s meeting with Manchester City.
But Mourinho, when asked about the incident, told the media world to decide whether his £89m man deserved to be sent off.
“I don’t know,” he said. “I leave for you that one. I leave for you the Lukaku situation with Koscielny, I leave for you the Arsenal players on the grass. The grass is absolutely beautiful – I think there is a desire to go onto the grass.”
The challenge that saw Pogba see red was by no means malicious, but rather an unfortunate – yet very much avoidable – result of the Frenchman giving everything in a game that entertained from start to finish.
Pogba may be one of the finest midfield players in the word but he remains comparatively inexperienced. Other players would have pulled out of that challenge in the last moment, but the 24-year-old lacked the composure needed when seeing out the latter stages of a game.
It was not the conclusion his superb performance deserved, but you cannot help but feel as if this moment of madness could come back to haunt Mourinho’s men next weekend.
