Manchester United’s David de Gea insisted on praising his fellow teammates rather than discuss his own performance after a heroic display vs Arsenal at the Emirates.
The Red Devils ran out 3-1 winners after an intense and fiery clash in what surely produced one of the matches of the season.
United set up with three central defenders, mirroring Arsenal’s backline but playing instead with a two striker partnership made up of Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku.
Although neither player managed to find the net, the young Frenchman was responsible for one of Jesse Lingard‘s two goals, assisting his teammate with a delightful flick.
Jose Mourinho’s men started the match brightly but soon found themselves under heavy pressure but thanks to De Gea’s brilliant display, managed to hold on for a crucial three points.
Speaking after the match the Spaniard said: “It was a difficult game. I’m really happy. We scored two quick goals but at the end of the first half we lost control of the game.
“It’s a win and I think all the team defends really well for the 90 minutes. We lost control of the game at the end of the first half. The sending off to Paul [Pogba] was difficult but we defended really well.”
David’s reputation as the world’s best goalkeeper may have slowed down for a short while but after tonight’s performance, he’s sure to garner interest from other clubs.
The former Atletico Madrid man proved just why Mourinho will have to do everything in his power to keep his star man this summer with Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid sniffing around.
The Spanish capital club have renewed their interest in De Gea and the player himself hardly seems keen to dismiss any rumours but after tonight’s performance Jose may be tempted to shackle him down to Old Trafford.
In big games, big players step up and David displayed his world class ability, denying a trigger happy Arsenal side from scoring any more than the single goal.
