Jose Mourinho explains where Man United went wrong against Man City

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has blasted referee Michael Oliver for his performance during the Manchester derby.

United took on Manchester City at Old Trafford in a hotly anticipated clash that ended in the Sky Blues favour.

David Silva opened the scoring for his team but Marcus Rashford quickly pegged the club’s arch rivals back before half time to keep things interesting.

After the break, Romelu Lukaku’s scuffed clearance was capitalised on by Nicolas Otamendi and the Red Devils couldn’t turn the score around with the match ending 2-1.

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera though was at the middle of a huge penalty appeal after he was tackled by Eliaquim Mangala or so Mourinho thought.

Speaking after the match, Jose said: “Clear penalty. I am sorry for us, I am sorry for Michael [Oliver], I think he had a good performance but it is a clear penalty.

“The referee made a mistake which can happen. Last season we had a similar situation here against Man City when Mr Clattenburg didn’t seen the penalty- Bravo on Rooney. It is a clear penalty.

“The referee is a human being, he tried his best, he was committed to having a good match we had but he made one mistake a crucial mistake for the result of the match.”

Jose Mourinho’s words are surely to get him fined by the FA and possibly banned from attending the next fixture.

Criticism of match officials are not welcome and the Portuguese manager may be attempting to distract the media from his team’s loss.

Supporters though are likely to lap up the excuse given the history the fans have with Michael Oliver who always seems to be on the end of some stick from the home crowd.

Referring decisions aside, the Red Devils were disappointing and put in a stiff first half display that wasn’t indicative of a winning performance.

The second half saw Mourinho allow his team to become more adventurous but the momentum may have already been killed.

After City’s second goal, United certainly looked as though the wind was taken out of their sails and were hardly impressive going forwards.
